If England take both remaining Australia wickets straight after lunch, without conceding any runs, they would need 257 to win.

They have only posted a score of more than that three times in nine innings during this series. Two were in their second innings if that helps.

    Do Australia already have enough?

It could have been even better for England this morning.

Alex Carey, in particular, has lived a charmed life. He dragged Chris Woakes on when he was on 19, but a no-ball was called. I'll leave you to decide if you agree after watching the clip - it was extremely close.

He was then given out lbw on 30, but the technology showed it had just pitched outside leg. He is 40 not out at lunch and those extra runs are hurting England.

Pat Cummins was also given out lbw first ball, but successfully reviewed. He's on 12 at lunch.

Stuart Broad picked up the other England wicket in that session when he had Cameron Green trapped lbw on review.

Broad has bowled really well too. He has honed in on the stumps and has continually hit Australia on the pads, but hasn't had much luck at all. Some very tight decisions have gone against him (more on that shortly).

Mark Wood took four wickets in that opening session to complete a five-wicket haul.

He now has 16 wickets in the series. He has generally bowled excellently and how fantastic is it to see his body holding up to play four Tests? He must be buzzing inside - he has had a really tough career at times.

It was one of the best sessions England have had. Wood bowled brilliantly.

The Test Match Special team are going to be talking about Virat Kohli stepping down as India Test captain during the lunch interval. You can listen along using the audio icon at the top of the page.

We'll spend lunch going back through the best clips from that first session.

Australia were 104-5 in that session.

England have given themselves a chance, but a chase of 257 is beyond them, right?

There were 18 runs in the final two overs of the session.

    Aus 141-8; lead by 256

Alex Carey pulls the final ball before lunch to the mid-wicket boundary, to move to 40, and to extend Australia's lead to 256.

The last two overs leaked 18 runs and some pressure has been relieved.

  11. Aus 136-8published at 49.4 overs

The Australia lead is up over 250...

    A big psychological moment.

Here is the successful Alex Carey review.

Stuart Broad's face at the end is a picture. Let's hope he stays around for a good few years, just for the entertainment value alone.

It is getting to that stage where Australia will breathe a sigh of relief. England will have a mountain to climb.

  14. Aus 130-8published at 49 overs

    Lead by 245

It feels like something could happen every single ball with Mark Wood and Stuart Broad bowling.

Pat Cummins twice turns just past short leg, while Alex Carey pulled a single down to fine leg, which was in the air for a good while too.

Lunch is three minutes away. This Stuart Broad over will probably be the final one.

  15. Aus 127-8published at 48.1 overs

    Lead by 242

Mark Wood is persisting with the round the wicket angle to Pat Cummins, but the Australia captain uses the angle across him to his advantage to pick up four through gully.

Dawid Malan, running round from third, should probably have done better.

  16. Postpublished at 05:53 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

Here's how Stuart Broad picked up the wicket of Cameron Green.

That feels an age ago. It was four overs...

  17. Aus 123-8published at 48 overs

    Lead by 238

Pat Cummins again takes a single from the final ball of the over. That means he'll be facing up to Mark Wood again - England won't mind that surely.

There are eight minutes till lunch so two or three overs. England would love another wicket, if not both to wrap up this innings.

England have bowled so well today.

  20. Aus 122-8published at 47 overs

    Lead by 237

Pat Cummins takes a single off the final ball to keep the strike.

Stuart Broad will present a different challenge at the other end.
