    Gone this time!

Alex Carey was bowled off a no-ball and overturned being given lbw, but not he is really is gone.

Stretching to drive Stuart Broad, he under-edges through to Sam Billings.

No half-century, but that 49 has probably put Australia out of England's reach.

Pat Cummins is a more than capable batter but we did see him looking uncomfortable against Mark Wood and the last thing Australia would want him is him breaking a finger so maybe it is an executive decision.

That is a strange decision because there are two balls left in the left, but it must be that Pat Cummins doesn't want to face the fireworks of Mark Wood.

    Carey 49, Cummins 13

There are men back on the leg side, but no one in front of square on the off as Wood tears in to Carey. The plan is not subtle, but it has worked. The lights are taking hold - it's 6pm in Hobart. Carey is protecting Cummins from Wood. Odd not to take the runs, but Cummins will be thinking he needs to be fit to bowl England out.

Nathan Lyon, the next and last man in, sits in the dressing room with his hands behind his head. He swatted Wood for three sixes in the first innings. Carey drives Broad and takes the single that moves him to 48. He's making a telling contribution on Tim Paine's home ground.

The crowd love that. It was very well played by Carey.

As a reminder, Australia would have been 91-7 had Alex Carey not been reprieved by that Chris Woakes 'no-ball'. Here he's climbing into Wood for a boundary. Carey would have been gone for 19, but has now moved to 47.

270 or 280 is get-able but having watched every day of this series it will be a struggle for England to get these runs.

It's like two different sports are being played out there. When Mark Wood is bowling it's like England are firing missiles at Australian targets. With the rest, like Stuart Broad here, it's more of a Sunday friendly. Three off the over.

Bairdy: Why don't England have a few more around the bat for Mark Wood against Cummins? Ball's popping up all over the place.

Wood has got Cummins fending and thrashing like a man trying to get away from a wasp. It makes you wonder what might have been had Jofra Archer and Olly Stone been fit. Then again, Daniel is right, Archer and Stone wouldn't have fixed the problems with the batting. That is where this series has been lost.

Great effort by seamers in series. Not been 400s 500s generally. But Australia haven't needed to score that. They will win this by 70 or 80 runs. Apart from Joe Root we have no top order.

The players are back out there. Pat Cummins is dancing around. Mark Wood, superb for 5-32, has the ball.

For as well as England have bowled this morning, winning this Test would be extraordinary. They haven't chased a total in excess of 200 to win in Australia for 60 years.

Are you sure England are going to bat in the next session?

  19. Postpublished at 06:30 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2022

Time for me to grab a break and have some breakfast.

Stephan Shemilt will take you through the middle session, where hopefully we see England showing some character with the bat.

    Enjoy.
