It wasn't a cut or a back foot shot from Kohli, just a nibble. What a breakthrough that is! There is an opening for New Zealand here.

That was a flashy shot from Kohli - a loose shot outside off stump.

    Kohli c Watling b Jamieson 13 (Ind 71-3)

Kohli gone! Well, well. Have we got a game on here? The India captain is out as he plays a loose waft outside off stump. He nicks it and BJ Watling snaffles the catch.

    The lead is only 39.

The fielding in this match has been first-class - there's barely been a dropped catch.

  6. Ind 71-2published at 35 overs

Some aggressive tactics from New Zealand as Henry Nicholls gets a helmet delivered to him and goes into silly mid-on to push Pujara back in his crease.

But Pujara is as unflustered as ever and blocks out a maiden.

England bowled a fifth stump line to Virat Kohli and New Zealand are trying the same - he likes to feel bat on ball, he doesn't like to leave it.

The crowd is slightly down on the previous days at the moment but we're expecting it to get up towards the numbers we have seen so far in this Test. Once again India fans dominate New Zealand and the Bharat Army's drummer has got another day off work. He is here again.

  9. Ind 71-2published at 34 overs

    Kohli 13, Pujara 14

No real fireworks yet from either side - the ball hasn't done much for New Zealand and the batters are just playing themselves in. It'll be interesting to see Kohli's tactics - will India increase their scoring rate to set up an aggressive declaration?

Just as I say not much is happening, Kohli plays and misses at two good length deliveries from Jamieson.

Say 25 overs are bowled before lunch. Batting at three runs per over, India would have a lead of 105 at lunch with 73 overs left. They would still not be safe from losing at all. A declaration is not going to happen unless someone like Pant goes mad.

  11. Ind 70-2published at 33 overs

Just the two off the over as Kohli guides the ball past gully, but he comfortably leaves four balls wide outside the off stump.

The crowd are just starting to find their voice this morning.

The ball hasn't done anything prodigious this morning.

  14. Ind 68-2published at 32 overs

    Kohli 11, Pujara 13

Kyle Jamieson takes the second over and starts with a maiden. The bowling from both sides over the course of this match has just been so impressive.

  16. Ind 68-2published at 31 overs

Kohli, batting well out of his crease, flicks off his legs for three for the first runs of the day.

Pujara then repeats the shot for just a single to retain the strike.

The players have made their way out to the middle and Virat Kohli is on strike to face Tim Southee. There was some surprise at Kohli coming out late last night rather than a nightwatchman - a statement of intent from the India captain for the day ahead?

India are going to want to make sure they are safe before even thinking about a declaration. It is New Zealand. This first session could break the game open.

  20. Postpublished at 10:27 British Summer Time 23 June 2021

There are all sorts of scenarios that could play out today. New Zealand are probably favourites - India have a slender lead of 32 with eight wickets left. But if the winter series against Australia is anything to go by, we should never write off this India side.
