Well, that man was perfectly positioned by Kane Williamson. Shami tries to mow the ball down the ground again, gets the outside edge and the man at short third-man doesn't even have to move an inch.

    Shami 13 c Latham b Southee (Ind 170-9)

Mohammed Shami is not going to die wondering. He throws the bat at ball from Tim Southee and the ball whistles through the slips and down to the boundary for four.

Kane Williamson expertly tinkers with his field, bringing Tom Latham up from the boundary into a kind of short third-man/fly slip position. Shami edges thickly again except this time it goes straight into the hands of Latham who is perfectly positioned.

Slog sweeper: This coming chase by New Zealand has massive Trent Bridge 2005 Ashes vibes about it… you won’t want to turn your eyes away for a second.

How many can New Zealand chase do we think? I think we might be heading for a thrilling finish. Trent Boult continues to bustle into the crease hungry for wickets. India scamper two singles.

It’s quiet now. The drummer is trying to get the rhythm going but it just feels like the wind has been knocked out of India.

Shami has got some shots in his locker and it would be good for India if he can play an innings a bit like Southee's cameo.

    India lead by 132 runs

Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami the new batsmen at the crease for India. The latter gets off the mark in style with a beautiful cut shot for four off Tim Southee. He follows it up two balls later with a delicious pull. Eight valuable runs off the over for India.

A double-wicket maiden for Trent Boult, who's had a quiet game by his standards up until now.

    Ashwin c Taylor b Boult 7 (Ind 156-8)

This could be a match-defining over from Trent Boult as he removes India's last recognised batsman. Ravichandran Ashwin attempts to crash a drive through the covers but the ball flashes of the edge of his bat and is caught smartly by Ross Taylor at wide first slip. New Zealand's fans are jubilant.

What a good effort that is, Nicholls running back from point. It was in the air for a long, long time and that's never easy.

    Pant c Nicholls b Boult 41 (Ind 156-7)

You spoke too soon, Matt... Kane Williamson shuffles his pack again, with Trent Boult replacing Kyle Jamieson and the left-arm seamer's impact is instantaneous.

Rishabh Pant advances down the track and attempts to whack Boult back down the ground over long on, but he sends the ball high into the air. Henry Nicholls waits an age then pouches the catch over his shoulder. A big wicket.

For all of Rishabh Pant’s attacking intent in this innings, has he actually hit the ball in the air?

I think we'll see Pant going after Southee here, coming down the track and going after it.

  19. Ind 156-6published at 14:14 British Summer Time 23 June 2021

Good analysis, Matt. It shows a captain confident in the ability of his bowling attack to execute their plans. I was just saying how Neil Wagner's short-pitched approach had started to look a little predictable and Kane Williamson whips him out the attack for Tim Southee. Pant pinches the strike off the last ball of the over.

I’ve spent the last three overs watching Kane Williamson in the field. It’s of note how little he actually does. He remains in his fielding position, rarely speaking to his bowlers, his arms occasionally going from folded across his chest to behind his back. There’s no playing up to the crowd, no loud encouragement. He just quietly and calmly observes.
