Rishabh Pant's chunky sliver bracelet, above the glove on his right hand, glistens in the afternoon sunshine as he initially plays defensively to Kyle Jamieson, who continues to prod and probe. Eventually Jamieson drops a short one in, and Pant whips it away for a single.

Both these batsmen are going to take on the short ball. If Pant connects with one, it'll go into the stands, he's just not quite finding the middle of the bat at the moment.

  3. Ind 154-6published at 14:05 British Summer Time 23 June 2021

    Pant 39*, Ashwin 7*

Neil Wagner doggedly persists with short-pitched bowling to both Rishabh Pant and Ravichandran Ashwin but both India batsmen have adjusted. It's a fairly productive over with seven taken off it.

Once India get to 180, if they do get there, will think that's a good target.

It'll be interesting to see how long Williamson will keep Kyle Jamieson on. He seems to be tiring but he won't want to let go of the ball.

  6. Ind 147-6published at 14:01 British Summer Time 23 June 2021

    India lead by 115 runs

Ravichandran Ashwin wafts at a wider one from Kyle Jamieson who puts his hands on top of his head after it just evades the edge. Another maiden over from the New Zealander seamer, who has 10 in this innings which is more than the rest of his team-mates combined. Accurate.

Many of the main group of New Zealand fans, who I mentioned yesterday were wearing armbands, goggles and snorkels, are shirtless today.

Pant is furious with himself there because it was the first ball Wagner had pitched up in that over and he would back himself to hit that for four.

  9. Ind 147-6published at 13:57 British Summer Time 23 June 2021

Lots of love for Rishabh Pant out there. With a flash of the blade he clips another shorter delivery from Neil Wagner for a single down to fine leg off the first ball of the over. Wagner against Ravichandran Ashwin is shaping up into a nice battle - Wagner peppers him with short-pitched delivery and the India all-rounder is happy to take him on, miscuing two pulls before middling one and running two. Kyle Jamieson is moved from mid-wicket and has a rueful smile a ball later when Ashwin clips one over Kane Williamson's head.

This is the partnership now, between Pant and Ashwin. They're into the tail after this.

  14. Ind 143-6published at 13:51 British Summer Time 23 June 2021

    India lead by 111 runs

Ravichandran Ashwin is the new man at the crease. India have a fairly long tail so it can't be long until Rishabh Pant really cuts loose. He picks a single up off another disciplined over from Kyle Jamieson.

That ball was a bit different - it angled across him, it was much fuller and all he could do was edge it behind.

Silence around most of the ground. Chants of “there’s only one Neil Wagner” from one section.

    Jadeja c Watling b Wagner 16 (Ind 142-6)

Ravindra Jadeja has left balls outside off stump throughout this session, but he's been done by a smart setup by Neil Wagner. The New Zealand left-armer targets Jadeja's body with his first four deliveries then angles one across the stumps and Jadeja just hangs the bat out. The ball tickles the edge and BJ Watling snaffles the catch. Clever stuff from the maestro.

    Pant 34*, Jadeja 16*

Rishabh Pant with a risky single off Kyle Jamieson which leaves him diving full length to reach the crease. Devon Conway shies at the stumps from an awkward angle and Pant would have been short of his ground if Conway had struck. Pant dusts himself down. He now has the kind of brown muddy stain down the front of his whites which looks as if he had an unfortunate incident with a gravy boat during lunch.
