  1. NZ 78-7published at 30 overs

Nearly the commentator's curse there as Tim Southee endures a rocky over.

He begins with a couple of loose shots. He then tries to heave the ball into next week, but completely misses it.

Broad shares a quiet word with Southee in response.

If Tim Southee stays in line with the ball and backs himself a bit more he's a more than capable batter.

I hope he just hangs in there today.

  3. NZ 76-7published at 28.3 overs

There's a few ooohs and aahhs from the Lord's crowd as Tim Southee cuts just over the fielder at backward point

A rare loose line from James Anderson next ball, allowing Southee to help the ball round the corner for another four.

Southee moves to 16 from just nine deliveries. New Zealand mounting a counter attack.

Kyle Jamieson was not hanging about at the start of this session, but you have to question the thinking behind this loose shot off James Anderson straight into the hands of Matthew Potts at fine leg.

After lunch and you get 40 minutes the pitch does change a little bit and it's not as nippy. You've got to throw that into the judgement about how we play.

  6. NZ 65-7published at 27.1 overs

Shot of the day contender from Tim Southee (a low bar I admit) as he pulls a short Stuart Broad delivery through midwicket for four.

  7. NZ 61-7published at 27 overs

Colin de Grandhomme had no idea where that went.

He looked to play it into the onside but was onto the shot too early and the ball instead flies to backward point for a rather fortuitous three.

The first time in three years that the Nursery Ground is packed at lunchtime. Something like normality returning to HQ.

After a very attritional start we've now seen 17 runs in 10 balls since lunch.

  10. NZ 56-7published at 26 overs

New Zealand have obviously decided on a change of approach as Colin de Grandhomme powers a Stuart Broad delivery off the back foot into the onside for four.

Decent response from Broad though with De Grandhomme playing and missing the final two balls of the over.

There's a slightly chaotic feel to this innings. It feels like something could happen every ball.

  11. NZ 50-7published at 25.2 overs

Tim Southee is the new batter and clips a single off his thigh to bring up the New Zealand fifty.

A ripple of applause around Lord's.

There was no discretion about it. It was just shot after shot after shot.

You value your wicket in these situations, but I don't know if New Zealand feel get in and get out in these conditions to have a bowl.

It wouldn't necessarily be the way that I'd choose.

  13. NZ 49-7published at 25 overs

Colin de Grandhomme drives the final ball of Anderson's first over after lunch for four. A better shot.

Ten off the over but yet another wicket. England picking up where they left off.

Well, there was something incredibly inevitable about that. It went straight to Matty Potts at fine leg.

What an extraordinary over after lunch.

    Kyle Jamieson is gone!

He pulled a short delivery for four but another ugly pull the next delivery flies into the air for an easy catch by Matthew Potts at deep fine leg.

That is the danger of taking this view - you don't show any discretion about what the ball is doing. You can't just hit everything.

  17. NZ 41-6published at 24.2 overs

    Kyle Jamieson isn't hanging about.

Second ball after lunch he heaves a rather clunky shot into the offside that flies into the air and lands safely for two.

    A sign of intent?

James Anderson, who conceded just two scoring shots in the first session, has the ball in hand...

  19. Postpublished at 13:45 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

Warm applause from the members as the England team begin to make their way back out on to the field, closely followed by the New Zealand batters.

The morning session delivered in spades. What will afternoon bring?
