England captain Ben Stokes on TMS: "We were going to bat first but we looked this morning and it's not the worst toss to lose. It's a bit damp and we'll see what Jimmy Anderson, Stuart Broad and all our bowlers can do.

"It was alright coming down the steps as captain - I just had to make sure I had the right coin because I've got dodgy fingers and had to use a special one.

"There's a real excitement. We've had three days of build-up and everyone is thankful the time is here to finally get going."

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson on TMS: "You always consider the options but we'll have a bat first and try to make use of the pitch first up. Trent Boult is going to play.

"As a mate I'm interested to see how Brendon McCullum goes as head coach. I'm sure he'll have a process and a big picture he's working towards."

And of course this new era had to start with New Zealand - the country of both Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum's birth. The side McCullum represented more than 400 times.

Kane Williamson's men, who comfortably beat England on the shores last summer don't forget, have arrived to spoil the party.

They are the world Test champions. England have only won one of their past 17 Tests.

It could only go one way, right?

    It's here. It's finally here.

After a winter of misery and the months of waiting since, Test cricket is back.

And England arrive at the sport's most famous arena riding a wave of optimism.

Ben Stokes is the new captain. Brendon McCullum the sprinkling of stardust as coach.

Can they deliver the results to turn this floundering ship around?
