Matty Potts has had his county team-mate next to him at mid-off which helps.

He is bowling with confidence too. But to go out on this stage, with the glare of all the cameras, your mentality gets tested.

Straight away you can see he got into the groove and in his first over at the home of cricket he got one of the big wickets of the game in Kane Williamson.

    The perfect start.

It was not all good news for England. Jack Leach took an nasty tumble attempting to save an early boundary and has been ruled out of the Test with concussion symptoms.

Matt Parkinson replaces him and is no doubt racing his way to London as I type.

It got even better for Potts.

He grabbed his second wicket when Daryl Mitchell played on, and then his third when he bowled Tom Blundell through the gate to leave the tourists on 36-6.

Debutant Matthew Potts then made a dream start to his Test career, removing the key wicket of Kane Williamson in his first over to leave New Zealand reeling on 12-4.

I don't think it gets much better than that.

England lost the toss but the two old timers Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad reminded us all what we missed earlier this year with a magnificent opening spell.

Will Young was the first batter to go after a wonderful catch by Jonny Bairstow at third slip.

Bairstow was also on hand to snare Tom Latham and Devon Conway to leave New Zealand 7-3.

    Thanks Matthew.

Well, the opening session of an English Test summer can sometimes be sleepy affairs but not here. It feels like we had a whole day's action condensed into a couple of hours.

And if you are bigging up Durham then I also feel obliged to champion the return of Lancashire's own Jimmy Anderson...

Anyway, let's have a recap of what has just happened.

  10. Postpublished at 13:15 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

Well that was fun. I'll say one thing before I hand over to Tom Mallows...

    Strong Durham, strong England.

    Go well.

Brilliant from England. Quite an easy morning for Ben Stokes. He didn't have to do too much.

The catching was good and the lengths were excellent - both have been an issue for England recently.

They have also had a ball that has done just enough and a batting line-up that is rusty.

So they caught New Zealand at the right time, but you cannot ask for a better start.

The opening spell from Broad and Anderson was just perfection.

What an incredible morning in this new chapter for English cricket.

You can't ask for any more if you are an England supporter.

  13. Lunch - NZ 39-6published at 24 overs

    And that is lunch.

Ben Stokes is shaking hands with every one of his team-mates. Brendon McCullum, in his England tracksuit and dark sunglasses on the balcony, is applauding from the Lord's balcony.

A new era couldn't start any better.

I think he has played safe.

It was a difficult one. Fair enough, the batter should have the benefit of the doubt.

It's tight. It's not easy for the third umpire. De Grandhomme has almost squeezed it onto his pad at the same time it hit.

Eventually the third umpire sides with the batter.

I reckon it just brushes the pad first.

    It's a tricky one.

  17. Postpublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

There's definitely some bat but was it pad first?

Potts liked that. I don't think it's far away.

  19. England reviewpublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

Hello. Ben Stokes goes for his first review.

It was Potts again who hit De Grandhomme on the pad. If there's no bat it's straight...

    Lord's settles down again.

Potts will bowl the final over of the morning session.
