  2. 'Nothing is going to change quickly'published at 19:09 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

    Jeremy Coney
Former New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

I don't know how to describe it all. it happened all so quickly and caught me by surprise.

Nothing is going to change quickly. It can't do. Brendon McCullum has been here for what, a week? You are not going to get huge changes in that time.

I think the players seem quite happy and have heard his big plan, but sport is about results.

  3. 'I've enjoyed every second of being here'published at 19:07 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

England bowler Matthew Potts speaking to BBC TMS: "I've had an absolutely wonderful day and enjoyed every second of being here.

"I thought I was quite composed, focused and controlled, but there were a few nerves deep down at the start."

On taking a wicket in his first over: "Absolutely over the moon. A wicket early can settle your rhythm and it was nice to get one.

"I've just tried to translate what I have been doing for Durham, which is to hit the pitch hard with a wobbled seam."

On seeking advice from James Anderson and Stuart Broad: "They have been great to have chats with. Having those kind of guys around you to ping a few ideas off. It's great to pick their brains and see how they go about their business."

  4. 'Worse possible start from the batting line-up'published at 19:05 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

The start under new management is so important as it means you can forget what has gone before.

That's been the worst possible start from the batting line-up because we are now talking about what has happened over the last year or so.

You can give them all the excuses in the world, but ultimately that amount of talent in the dressing room has failed to deliver.

  5. 'It was a capitulation from England'published at 19:00 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

    Jeremy Coney
Former New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

Jamieson brought it back for New Zealand. They were down and a bit broken, but he stuck at it and removed Crawley and Pope.

It was then just a capitulation. They had so much time. They were only chasing 130 on a pitch that, while it did a little, wasn't a minefield.

  6. 'I had a tear in my eye this morning'published at 18:58 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

England bowler Matthew Potts speaking to Sky Sports after his 4-13 on debut: "It was a great debut. It was nice to get some wickets early on and settle the nerves. Credit to Jimmy and Broady. It was really, really good.

"A lot of my success down to my family. I am really over the moon with it. I had a little tear in my eye this morning and I imagine my parents did too.

"Honesty it [bowling first] is probably the best way it could have worked out rather than having built up nerves. It is best to get it out of the way. The first ball was fine. I gathered my thoughts well. The second ball half tracker."

On the team's bowling performance: "The main thing we looked at was to be aggressive and try and take wickets. We assessed the length quite well and tried push it up there to be attacking and aggressive. They had a little bit of fightback but we held in there and got through that."

On his injury issue which saw him leave the field: "It was just a bit of cramp. I think nerves took the better of me. The body has probably just been sapped with nervous energy in the debut. I will be fine tomorrow. I am fine now."

  7. 'Are we surprised at England? Absolutely not'published at 18:56 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

It has been decent bowling, very good bowling at times, but let's be honest the batting today has been poor for both sides.

Are we surprised at England? Absolutely not.

Brendon McCullum would have been sat there about four o'clock thinking 'I've got a good set of players here, there's not much I need to say'.

In the last hour he has seen there is a hell of a lot of work to go into this batting unit.

England's collapse is baffling and still in some ways rather familiar.

  9. '17 wickets, on that pitch, is a lot'published at 18:53 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I think a few of our friends in the media were scrabbling around in the last hour changing their reports.

From the optimism of it being a good toss to lose and bowling out a New Zealand side that looked rusty. It all looked rosy at 52-0, the foundation was set.

But from then on it was all about the mentality of these players. Seventeen wickets to fall on that pitch today, it's a lot.

More wickets, five to be precise, fell before the close as England collapsed in all too familiar fashion.

Joe Root played a couple of nice shots before being caught in the gully, while Alex Lees, Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow all fell in disappointing and circumspect fashion.

Matty Potts was the last man to fall today, as he gloved a decent bouncer from Trent Boult to first slip.

England closed on 116-7 - 16 runs behind New Zealand.

  11. 'Why has Pope never batted at three?'published at 18:50 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Pope has never batted at number three and he has never done it. Why has he never done it for Surrey? If I was Pope or any player that had been mentioned I'd have been whacking on the county coaches door saying I'd bat three.

Brook should have done it at Yorkshire too.

The ball after playing a glorious cover drive, Zak Crawley tried to play another booming drive but got a healthy edge through to Tom Blundell, behind the stumps.

Ollie Pope, batting at three for the first time in his career, was dogged initially but it was another all-to-familiar dismissal as he feathered behind.

Michael Vaughan has just said that New Zealand are now favourites to win this game.

    Do you agree?

Thumbs up for yes. Thumbs down for no, England are.

  14. Postpublished at 18:45 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

England's reply got off to a good start with Zak Crawley, who played some beautiful drives, and Alex Lees combining for a 50 partnership.

It was England's first 50 opening stand at Lord's since 2017.

  15. Postpublished at 18:44 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

Captain Ben Stokes picked up the final New Zealand wicket as England dismissed them for 132.

Stokes must have thought the captaincy lark was easy business at that point. He'll have tougher days and there were signs of him spreading the field when New Zealand started to attack and play non-traditional shots.

  16. Postpublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

James Anderson, making his return to the side having been left out of the West Indies tour in March, ended with 4-66.

He bowled economically in the morning session alongside the two early wickets of Will Young and Tom Latham. He got a bit of tap after lunch before picked up the wickets of Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee as both looked to score quick runs.

  17. Postpublished at 18:39 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

Debutant Matty Potts then got in on the action removing Kane Williamson for his first Test wicket before also getting Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell before lunch.

He came back later on to pick up the ninth wicket, that of Ajaz Patel, before he limped off mid-over with cramp in his left leg. We did see him with the bat later on in the day so we assume that is nothing too serious.

  18. Postpublished at 18:37 British Summer Time 2 June 2022

The day started with New Zealand and Kane Williamson winning the toss and electing to bat first. It seemed a fair call on what looked like a batting track.

England got off to the perfect start though with James Anderson and Stuart Broad combining to remove Will Young, Tom Latham and Devon Conway in the first 7.1 overs.

Mike: England doing their level best to justify the ticket price. £8.23 per wicket seems very reasonable.
