John Petrie: That's two dropped catches. Has the improved fielding in the McCullum era already peaked?

Jon Evans: Now Root isn't captain I wouldn't have him at first slip. Seems to drop more than he catches.

  2. NZ 176-4published at 46.0 overs

James Anderson and Ben Stokes bowling well in tandem here to build some pressure. Tom Blundell is cautious, and sees off a maiden from the former.

The cameras pan to England's coaching team on the balcony at Trent Bridge. Brendon McCullum and James Foster are sat there, relatively motionless, dressed in an all-grey England training kit which makes them look like a couple of stationary daleks who have come to watch the cricket on a day off.

On the pitch it's intriguing stuff as Ben Stokes continues to probe outside off stump. Here's a clip of James Anderson dismissal of Devon Conway from moments ago.

  4. NZ 174-4published at 44.0 overs

Here's the dismissal of Henry Nicholls from a little while ago.

James Anderson is over the wicket to Tom Blundell, and sees his third ball punched through point for four. Impressive start to his innings.

You would think this would be a period of consolidation for New Zealand up until tea, but England's lengths will give them scoring opportunities.

You would expect Joe Root to catch that.

  6. dropped catch

    Dropped catchpublished at 43.0 overs

Ben Stokes rattles through five dots before he finishes with a no ball.

He makes use of the extra delivery by drawing an edge from Daryl Mitchell's bat which finds the hands of Joe Root at first slip, but the ball pops out.

That really was a bread-and-butter catch for the former England skipper.

Another New Zealand batsman who has got in, made it look pretty easy, then got out. England are picking up these crucial wickets.

    Conway c Foakes b Anderson 46 (NZ 169-4)

Excellent jinxing Shane...James Anderson finds the inside edge of Devon Conway's bat and Ben Foakes gobbles up the catch.

Anderson cuts one off the seam and Conway is cut in two, the ball brushing the inside edge high on the bat, and it's into Foakes big black gloves. Anderson gets a huge bear hug from a beaming Jonny Bairstow in the celebration that follows.

A couple more wickets and this could be a good day for England.

Shane O'Neill: I can see Conway making a big hundred today and NZ piling up 350+ by the close. My hope, naturally, is that I just jinxed him.

  10. NZ 169-3published at 41.0 overs

Ben Stokes, his ginger hair slicked back like he's in the Godfather films, attempts to build some pressure outside Daryl Mitchell's off stump. However, his final ball strays on to the pads off Mitchell who clips it away between backward square and fine leg for four.

Conway was running with glove in one hand and bat in the other. He didn't look like he was particularly ready for a sharp single.

  12. NZ 162-3published at 40 overs

The hirsute Daryl Mitchell is at the crease, the new man in, and off the mark from final ball of James Anderson's over.

It's the kind of single Kevin Pietersen, having supped isotonic drinks waiting to bat, was famed for taking. Matthew Potts shies at the stumps, but Devon Conway makes it home.

A quick drinks break after the fall of that wicket. Excellent management by the umpires. G&T anyone? Not sure my boss would approve, mind.

Stokes is the bowler who has found the most swing today. New Zealand will be happy. England will be thinking if we can go bang, bang again and have New Zealand 180-5 then they're back in the game.

It has been all-action cricket since lunch. There have been chances but finally Stokes has found one to nip away and take the edge.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 39.0 overs

    Nicholls c Foakes b Stokes 30 (NZ 161-3)

    Ben Stokes the partnership breaker!

As in the morning session the England captain has brought himself into the action at a critical juncture to help wrestle back the initiative.

Stokes, around the wicket with his final ball of the over, angles it into Henry Nicholls who is caught in two minds. He ends up waggling his bat to one which nips away and edges it into the gloves of Ben Foakes.

Jon Evans: Feels like NZ are well in control, which they may be, but it's a sign of how test cricket has changed. Would've historically seen 150-2 as a typical score. They've just scored it a little quicker than of old.

  19. NZ 161-3published at 38.5 overs

Ben Stokes is now around the wicket to Devon Conway, who is closing in on a half-century. His penultimate is yorker-length which is dug out and steered into the on side by Conway on one leg. New Zealand run three.
