Here's that drop from Zak Crawley - England's first of the series - off Stuart Broad from a little earlier.

Broad, at the top of his mark in his next over, encourages the crowd with some gesticulations hoping to build this spell into the frenzy culminating in the wicket of Devon Conway.

The Nottinghamshire seamer's knees are pumping and Conway waggles at his third delivery outside off stump, before the New Zealand man edges one just short of gully.

    A maiden over.

The crowd is getting behind Broad now, and he likes it.

  3. NZ 140-2published at 32.0 overs

    Conway 34, Nicholls 21

An eventful over, as things start to open up.

Devon Conway tucks into a delicious half-volley from Matthew Potts and dispatches him to the boundary for four with a cover drive.

Two balls later and Potts presents a beautiful seam position and ball nips back into to Conway's pad before a short one from the Durham seamer is pulled - via a top edge - for four.

    Broad to continue.

Stuart Broad has just started to hit a bit of a rhythm. He is finding some seam movement.

  5. NZ 131-2published at 31.0 overs

Here's those back-to-back boundaries off Stuart Broad's first over after lunch. He's back into the contest in this over, though.

Broad's second delivery beats Henry Nicholls outside off stump and the crowd start to voice their encouragement. His final delivery of the over is short, quick, and climbs into Nicholls who is pinned deep in his crease and watches it beat his outside edge.

  6. NZ 129-2published at 30.0 overs

The crowd are little more vociferous after that over from Stuart Broad and Matthew Potts follows up with a solid over, almost strangling Henry Nicholls with one down the leg side. One run from the over

Broad, white headband in stiu, to continue.

Leave it to Joe. Crawley has gone well across first slip. He threw his hand at him and it hit him hard. Whereas Joe could have just caught it at a good height.

    That will anger Stuart Broad.

  9. dropped catch

Nicholls dropped on 17published at 29.0 overs

As is the fashion in international cricket when things aren't going your way, England grumble about the ball being out of shape. Umpire Paul Reiffel plops the ball through a special ring, determines there is nothing awry, and hands the ball back to Stuart Broad.

The Nottinghamshire quick beats Henry Nicholls for pace with this penultimate delivery. Broad then draws an edge and it flies through to the slip cordon. An overly-eager Zak Crawley, at second slip, dives in front of Joe Root, at first, but is unable to cling on one-handed.

Would have been a simple catch at knee-height for Root.

Ollie Pope stopped the four but watch out for that shoulder. He's had a couple of shoulder injuries.

  11. NZ 126-2published at 28.0 overs

You'll recall England's bowling attack were handed a mandate to bowl a fuller to go in search of wickets, but New Zealand's batters are timing it well here.

Mathew Potts is too full to Henry Nicholls and only a dive on the boundary from Ollie Pope prevents the boundary as the Kiwis run three. Devon Conway, who looks in fine fettle here, plays with soft hands and guides Potts through third man region for another three runs.

Stuart Broad has now bowled eight overs and conceded eight fours.

  13. NZ 118-2published at 27 overs

Stuart Broad, who struggled with his length a little this morning, is a smidgen full to Devon Conway with his first delivery and he's driven for a couple.

It sets the tone for the over, and Broad is driven beautifully by Conway for back-to-back boundaries. The first is full and wide outside off stump and Conway crisply times it through the point region, and the second is exquisite as he drives gloriously through covers.

    Broad looks grumpy.

So into the afternoon session we go. England's players congregate in a huddle on the edge of the boundary and are now striding out to the middle from the Pavilion End. The sun is out and the flags at the top of the stand are flapping in a stiff breeze.

Stuart Broad just loosening up to bowl the first over after lunch. Devon Conway to face, and Henry Nicholls at the non-striker's end.

You can't rely on long hops to get you wickets in Test cricket. England are going to have to bowl better than that after lunch.

  16. Anderson strikes next ballpublished at 13:39 British Summer Time 10 June 2022

One brings two, as the saying goes. And it was two wickets in two balls. A long hope from James Anderson drew a miscued pull shot from Tom Latham into the hands of Matthew Potts.

  17. Stokes gets breakthroughpublished at 13:35 British Summer Time 10 June 2022

Ben Stokes brought himself into the attack and saw his first ball disappear for four, but the England skipper's diligence paid off as Will Young edged one into the hands of Zak Crawley in the slips.

New Zealand's opening partnership was worth 84 runs - the highest first-wicket stand at Trent Bridge in Test cricket since 2005.

  18. Will Young's best hitspublished at 13:28 British Summer Time 10 June 2022

Will Young, a middle-order batter converted into an opener, benefitted most from the lack of movement through the air and off the pitch. A few balls from James Anderson climbed into him, striking his gloves, showing there is bounce in the pitch. But he was largely able to play with fluency.

  19. Latham confidencepublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 10 June 2022

Despite the balance being slightly tipped in the favour of the bowlers, there was only a hint of movement and swing around. James Anderson looked more threatening than Stuart Broad - who struggled for length - but Tom Latham looked organised and picked off anything slightly loose.

New Zealand were without skipper Kane Williamson after he tested positive for Covid-19 the night before the match.

Tom Latham filled in for Williamson. He called incorrectly at the toss and Ben Stokes, with a tinge of green on the pitch and a bit cloud around at Trent Bridge, took the decision to bowl first.
