I can understand the soft signal and the TV umpire's decision. The appeal wasn't that convincing either.
Root drops Mitchell (3) and Blundell (47); Blundell also edges through slips on 63
Nicholls, dropped on 17 by Crawley, caught behind off Stokes for 30
Anderson then has Conway caught behind for 46
New Zealand put on 84 for first wicket before openers fall in quick succession

I can understand the soft signal and the TV umpire's decision. The appeal wasn't that convincing either.
Third umpire Rod Tucker says the ball "was clearly on the ground" after reviewing the TV pictures a few times.
Devon Conway survives. England's players did not look entirely convinced and neither did Matthew Potts.

It looks to me as if it bounced in his fingers. You can't guarantee from the replays that it's not hit the turf. I don't think you can give it out from those TV pictures.

It felt like a halfhearted celebration. He caught it low and then tossed it up. It wasn't with any great deal of jubilation.
Is this England's third wicket?
James Anderson sees his third delivery whipped by Devon Conway into the hands of Matthew Potts at mid-wicket. England celebrate, but hang on a moment the umpires want another look.
Soft signal is not out...

Stephan, you want to buy a double gin in London. Then you can truly use the word shocked.

A high full toss from Ben Stokes with his third ball is fended off by Devon Conway. Was he trying to execute a yorker? Stokes gets it right off his final delivery but it is dug out by Henry Nicholls.
Matthew Potts replaced by James Anderson from the Pavilion End.

They're desperate for this ball to be swapped, but it keeps going straight through the gadget. Sorry, Ben, you're going to have to carry on.
There's nothing worse than being in the field and you've got a ball which is just doing nothing for you.
Ben Stokes brings himself into the attack to break the partnership, giving himself a chance to complain to the umpires about the ball at close quarters in the hope of a change.

I've never understood the idea inserting the opposition puts pressure on their batters. It seems to put more pressure on the bowlers because of the expectation of early wickets.

That's exactly what Ben Stokes is there for - the top edge and the mistimed pull shot. But it's just not going England's way.
Depends on the quality of the gin on offer, I'd say Stephan.
Matthew Potts bangs his third ball in short to Henry Nicholls - who top-edged a pull for four a few overs ago - and it's a similar delivery, trying to extract a miscue. Nicholls duly spoons one up but skipper Ben Stokes, in a catching position in leg gully on the 45, is unable to quite make up his ground quickly enough to get a hand to it.

It's £8.50 for a double gin at Trent Bridge. Am I right to be shocked about this, or am I out of touch?
Possibly the host of the day so far? Conway looks in good nick.
After a some feisty crowd encouragement Stuart Broad drops back to the disciplines of line and length in his next over. Henry Nicholls and Devon Conway are both watchful, and happy to leave and block as required. One run from a leg bye off the over.

Robert: The Devon Conway cover drive is a thing of beauty.

Chris Jones: Good battle between Broad and Conway. Edges, leaves, plays and misses. Crowd getting behind the local lad. Proper Test cricket this.

It's unusual to have over 100 runs in the first session of day one. This is the joint fastest in the last 44 Tests played in England.

Last week was easy for Matthew Potts. This is real Test cricket now!
Stuart Broad turns cheerleader when he goes back down to his fielding position at the end of his over, urging the crowd to get behind Matthew Potts.
The Durham seamer is a touch short to Devon Conway with his fourth delivery and the Kiwi left-hander gets over the top of it and pulls him for four. Conway looks like he means business here.
