England have had a little bit of good fortune when Alex Lees was dropped by Daryl Mitchell. It was a comfortable catch which should have been held. You can be sure Mitchell won't be thinking of his 190. He'll be thinking of that drop.

  2. Eng 84-1published at 24.0 overs

Trent Boult swings one into the pads of Ollie Pope and a leading edge saves the Surrey man from a near-certain lbw. Boult gasps, knowing that was close.

Two or three more overs to get in here before the scheduled close at 19:05.

Fran Adam: Imagine having a bowler as versatile, effective and known for taking wickets on flat decks as Neil Wagner and picking Matt Henry over him. Whatever the outcome of the series NZ have made some shocking calls this series so far.

Pope has been dropped but has also played very positively. England's new number three making a half-century in his third innings in the position.

Half-century for Popepublished at 24.0 overs

A single off Trent Boult allows Ollie Pope to keep the strike for Kyle Jamieson's next over.

Jamieson presents a nice seam position to Pope with his fourth delivery, but the England No.3 is able to shuffle across to off stump and with exquisite technique he is down on one knee to drive it to the boundary.

Pope then brings up his half-century off Jamieson's final ball with a stylish - if somewhat risky - back foot cut for four. Nice.

I think the keeper should be naturally coming across to take that catch and always looking to his right against the left-hander.

That went rapidly. It was not a good shot from Pope. He played it away from his body.

  9. dropped catch

Pope dropped on 37published at 21.2 overs

Trent Boult back into the attack and his second ball has Ollie Pope fidgeting at one with his hands away from his body from a delivery angled across him. Daryl Mitchell reacts late and gets a paw on it diving to his left but is unable to cling on and the ball races away for four.

There's been some nice strokes played by Pope and Lees but I just feel there's something here for New Zealand. There's angling happening for them, there's a bit of bounce for Jamieson and Henry.

  11. Eng 70-1published at 21.0 overs

Alex Lees has a few idiosyncrasies to his batting I've noticed. He's chewing gum furiously between deliveries but then lodges it on his molars somewhere when the bowler begins his run up. Lees then likes a hearty long look back at where the back of his bat is while the bowler is en route to the crease.

A maiden from Kyle Jamieson to Lees, but here's a clip of a boundary from a little earlier.

A change of ball from the umpires after the original one was deemed to have been slightly misshapen. Kyle Jamieson will continue from the Radcliffe Road End.

That wasn't in complete control and Henry has a wry smile. I don't think Henry will mind that too much.

    Eng 70-1published at 20.0 overs

Ollie Pope, twiddling his bat with a natty pink grip between deliveries, initially happy to play tip and run in his next over from Matt Henry.

He dabs Henry's third ball through gully for a couple, and then clips it for another couple through mid-wicket.

Henry responds by digging one into the pitch but it sits up ever so slightly and allows Pope to hook it square for six. Not entirely convincingly, but it's to the shorter boundary so he got his sums right.

This is a good battle. I'm enjoying this. Two younger players for England with Lees trying to establish himself and Pope looking to cement that number three position.

  16. Eng 60-1published at 19.0 overs

Alex Lees with a waspish drive outside off stump from Kyle Jamieson's second ball yields four more runs through the cover region.

Dare I jinx it by saying...these two England batters look fairly comfortable here?

You just got the feeling that something was going to happen. Having faced three maiden overs, Ollie Pope kept his composure there. A couple of delightful cover drives. Quality.

I didn't like the pull shot, though. He was in no position to play that.

  18. Eng 56-1published at 18.0 overs

    Ian Bell comparison klaxon.

Ollie Pope with a deliciously controlled drive all along the carpet off Matt Henry which whistles to the boundary. He follows it up with an equally sweet cover drive at the end of the over.

Fans of classical cricket shots are purring.

Sandwiched in between, however, is something not quite so aesthetic. A short quick ball from an agitated Henry brings an attempted Pope pull. It's a top edge over the wicketkeeper's head for six.

Was he looking to hit it as fine as that? I think he was looking to hit it a bit more square. He didn't control it perfectly.

  20. Eng 40-1published at 17.0 overs

Alex Lees breaks the brief stranglehold by the Kiwi attack with a squirt through point after Kyle Jamieson's second delivery is a tad full outside off stump. New Zealand's fielders chase the ball to the boundary but it's to no avail. A welcome four runs added to the total.
