  1. Eng 36-1published at 16.0 overs

Ollie Pope with a good leave to an awkward delivery from Matt Henry which jagged in and climbed over his stumps. He's starting to trust the pace and bounce of the pitch.

Another maiden - 18 dot balls from Henry to Pope, but England seem to have regained some composure here. They could do with a nice quiet finish to the day.

  2. Eng 36-1published at 15.0 overs

The sipping and guzzling at drinks is over and Kyle Jamieson continues to Alex Lees, and he churns another maiden over.

Jamieson stands at 6ft 8ins (or 2m 3cm) - which is still some way behind the tallest Test cricketer, Mohammad Irfan, who is a towering 7ft 1in (2m 16cm).

We have about 45 minutes of play left today following a rain delay earlier in the afternoon.

Bit of H20, isotonic liquid, cup of tea or perhaps something stronger.

I think Lees has come out and played quite positively. A couple of really good off-side drives. But he's not quite finding his timing.

  5. Eng 36-1published at 14.0 overs

Matt Henry has a nice smooth and efficient bowling action - not a jot of energy wasted off a relatively short run-up. Ollie Pope happy to see off a maiden.

I think this fella, the big lad Jamieson, is going to cause some problems on this pitch.

  7. Eng 36-1published at 13.0 overs

Kyle Jamieson, tall, blonde and square-jawed, takes over from Tim Southee and bounds in from round the wicket with his powerful action.

Twice he is back of a length to Alex Lees, who looks comfortable enough to punch him through the covers - once off back foot, and once off the front - for a couple.

It did bounce a long way in front of Southee at slip but it was a loose drive.

  9. Eng 32-1published at 12.0 overs

Something building for the Kiwis. A flashy drive from Ollie Pope off Matt Henry's third ball and it takes the edge but does not quite carry through to the slip cordon. Pope through the shot a little too early, which perhaps saved him.

    A maiden from Henry.

Rob Key - please be more radical with our top order than you are being. At least Crawley and Bairstow need to make way. It can't be any worse. New blood please.

  11. Eng 32-1published at 11.0 overs

It's been a long couple of days in the field for Alex Lees, and he momentarily thinks about taking on a hook against Tim Southee only to pull out of the shot. Two balls later he ducks out of the way to another short one from the languid New Zealand seamer.

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

In Crawley's 29 innings since he scored a double century against Pakistan in 2020, he has scored one century and two other 50s. He's been out in single figures in 18 of those 29 innings.

  13. Eng 31-1published at 10.0 overs

Matt Henry settles into his first over. England, wisely, not taking any risks and Alex Lees and Ollie Pope nudging three runs off the over.

Here's Lees getting a lucky escape off the bowling of Tim Southee moments ago.

Thanks Ffion. Ball by ball, over by over until the close is all Ollie Pope and Alex Lees should be thinking about here.

Matt Henry comes into the attack for New Zealand. All the mood music from the Kiwi camp before this Test was he's been looking handy in the nets and that's why he got the nod ahead of Neil Wagner.

  15. Eng 27-1published at 9 overs

    Lees 16, Pope 7

Southee continues to tempt Ollie Pope outside the off stump but he refuses to give in to temptation - for now.

And on that note, that's me done for the day. Here's Timothy Abraham to guide you through the rest of the day's play.

Seb Eaton: Zak Crawley got a good one this Test but I still can't understand how he's considered a better option than Rory Burns.

David: How many times does Crawley have to fail before someone else gets a go?

Rishi Clark: Loads of people talking about Crawley's dismissal, but it was unplayable. Cross seam and spat at him, had to play... Great ball!

  17. Eng 26-1published at 8 overs

After the rain delay earlier, there's still an hour and 15 minutes play left.

Another over is negotiated by Pope and Lees, settling the nerves. Ish.

Lees played it well. It looked a bit dodgy but he played it with soft hands and rode the ball with his hands.

  19. Eng 24-1published at 7 overs

    Lees 16, Pope 4

Another edge from Lees but this time it flies past the slips and to the third man boundary. He's riding his luck at the moment.

    Could it be his day?

It was the perfect height. Blundell was hiding his face with disbelief. New Zealand are the best catching team in world cricket at the moment and you'd expect him to take it.
