  1. dropped catch

Lees dropped on 12published at 17:41 British Summer Time 11 June 2022

    Could you believe it?

Lees nicks the ball straight to Daryl Mitchell at slip, it's straight in the hands ... and straight out!

Right then. Mitchell himself was dropped on three and went on to make 190. Over to you, Alex Lees.

I know this is tempting fate, horribly, but this really is Pope's moment. If he as an ounce of what the selectors think he has, NOW is the time to prove it......pleeeease.

    Mark, Somerset.

  3. Eng 20-1published at 6 overs

Pope dabs uncertainly at a wide one outside off stump that gets the New Zealand slips excited.

A confident leave from the final ball is probably what he should've done.

I think it must be down to Crawley's judgement on and around the off-stump. Better judgement leaving the ball better would help. But it's hard when one of your main scoring shots is also one of your main weaknesses.

  5. Eng 17-1published at 5 overs

Ollie Pope clips nicely off his legs for four to get off the mark as Southee loses his line.

This is still a good pitch for batting. Only England could make us think it isn't.

Alastair Cook is currently on commentary on the radio. Wonder if he's got his pads with him.

  6. Eng 12-1published at 4 overs

A quiet over, thankfully, as Ollie Pope sees off Boult. Tense times for England. There's still a lot of overs left today.

    Richard Marc: Utterly, utterly predictable.

Mark Russell: Can England avoid the follow-on to the follow-on? 155 is the magic figure.

Yash Dhawan: There's urgent need for Zak Crawley to play within himself for first 10 overs at least.

That's a very big shot early on. Since the first innings at Lord's, Lees has come out trying to be a lot more positive. I don't mind that but I think he can rein it in a little bit. He can give himself time.

  9. Eng 11-1published at 3 overs

    Oh Alex Lees.

He drills a glorious drive down the ground for four and then, for some bizarre, inexplicable reason, slashes at a wide one from Southee that he inside edges just past the stumps.

And I mean, it was wiiiiide.

That was horrible viewing. I'm all for being positive but I'm not holding out much hope here.

That will send a message to the changing room. The guys will be a bit apprehensive now. The next wicket is big. We don't want Rooty to be coming out too early.

    Crawley c Blundell b Boult 4 (Eng 6-1)

The answer is no, he can't.

It's beautiful bowling from Trent Boult but how predictable was that? Full, off stump, hint of swing and Crawley feathers it through to the keeper.

Two overs in and England are already doing England things.

  13. Eng 6-0published at 1.4 overs

Unsurprisingly, Trent Boult takes the second over. He dangles three balls outside Zak Crawley's off stump that he resists, before giving in to the fourth and driving it gloriously through the covers for England's first boundary.

    Can he resist long enough?

  15. Eng 2-0published at 1 over

Now then. Over to you, Zak Crawley and Alex Lees. The latter digs out the first ball from Tim Southee.

Close is due to be at 19:05 BST tonight, assume that the weather and light is OK.

That means England will have to bat for around an hour and 45 minutes. Eek.

How many wickets will they lose? They can't afford to lose many with a deficit of 553 staring at them.
