These two have played really nicely - it is a great opportunity for both to go on and make a big, big score but they've still got to earn the right.

They've had a bit of fortune but they survived and they've played nicely. We know it is a fast-scoring venue.

I am surprised that New Zealand haven't bowled the off-spinner yet, particularly to Alex Lees.

It has been a brilliant morning so far. As a batsman overnight it is just about getting through that first half an hour and they've done that beautifully.

I just wonder if New Zealand will have a change of pace and give their spinner Michael Bracewell a go.

Love this from Alex Lees. Jamieson bowls a tight line bouncing up towards Lees' ribcage. The England opener opens the face of his bat and effortlessly jabs it down to the third-man boundary.

It's time for drinks and this England pair are lapping up the conditions.

There is a lot a chat about positivity but Alex Lees' strike-rate is just normal. He's just looked to score when New Zealand have missed.

Henry goes short. It rises sharper than current fuel prices and pierces through keeper Tom Blundell's outstretched hands for a bye.

Lees whips a leg-side delivery off his pads for another England boundary. Easy as you like.

The word opportunity has been used a lot in the last few years but today is an opportunity for Alex Lees.

There won't be many better ones in England with this pitch, these conditions and this year's ball.

We know that Alex Lees can score big from county cricket and hopefully we see that today.

  8. Eng 133-1published at 39 overs

Lees takes three more from the over. Two England batters in their fifties and looking solid. A positive first hour for the hosts.

A roar for Alex Lees. It is a big moment for him - he has played in such an assured fashion in this innings and he deserves his half-century.

He looks a Test player. It has been a really calm and authoritative innings.

What an opportunity for him today.

He does it in style! Alex Lees tucks off his hips for a boundary and his first Test half-century.

The Nottingham crowd and his England team-mates applaud from the balcony as Lees raises his bat.

A moment he will never forget.

I just wonder how much New Zealand are going to regret not picking Neil Wagner.

The pitch hasn't quite played how we all expected with the green tinge but New Zealand's attack are all quite samey.

Wagner is a big point of difference.

On comes the giant Kyle Jamieson. Pope works it towards short fine leg for a single.

Katherine Brunt and Nat Sciver are here, not celebrating their recent wedding, but England team-mate Amy Jones' birthday. They are in a box just down from the media centre.

A maiden for Matt Henry. Lees will have to wait a little longer for a first Test half-century.

It was really good bowling from Tim Southee actually. Since Alex Lees has drove him for a few fours he's pulled his length back a bit and that was a bit fuller but it wasn't there to drive.

That was not a convincing shot but it is four runs nonetheless.

Alex Lees was having a conversation with Tim Southee in the middle of the pitch there.

It was a horrible shot actually.

  18. Eng 124-1published at 37 overs

Alex Lees has struggled at times for England, but is looking comfortable and at ease this morning. He steers Boult through the off side for a single and then punches off the back foot for two more.

And just as I type that, the opener chases at a wider delivery and edges through the empty fourth slip region for four. Streaky. Lees moves to 49.

It's about to get very interesting I think...

  20. Eng 116-1published at 36 overs

A change in the bowling as Matt Henry is brought into the attack.

Henry gets some lift off the turf as Pope shoulders his arms. The seamer strays on middle and leg, a fuller delivery, and Pope confidently dispatches it down to the square-leg boundary.
