David, you're not alone there. I think almost as many people have made that pun as those who keep saying Will Young better 'leave right now'.

Tim Southee bowls wide outside the off stump and Overton wafts at it. Play and a miss.

The seamer strays down the leg side and Overton glances down to fine-leg for a single.

Has everyone done the "over a ton" pun if Jamie gets beyond a hundred? My girlfriend has kept on with it since the close of play yesterday.

The first runs of the day as Jonny Bairstow clips to mid-wicket for a single. Jamie Overton nudges into the leg side for one more, moving his score into the nervy nineties.

England are 266-6 after 50 overs. Would have been quite a decent ODI score some years ago.

Adam Durrant: The big difference between the innings so far is the insane speed that England rack up runs. NZ 117.3 overs for their total, England 65 behind in under 50. That's with Root and Stokes going cheaply as well, and those two can score quickly as well.

New Zealand missed the spin of Ajaz Patel yesterday and they will certainly miss him in the fourth innings.

We'll start with spin with Michael Bracewell bowling to Jonny Bairstow. Just a short delay as we wait for some spectators to take their seat behind the bowler's arm. Come on. Sort it out.

One of the big talking points from earlier in the day on Friday was DRS going down, meaning Tom Blundell was unable to review an lbw decision.

I think we got to the bottom of who was to blame.

'Jerusalem' plays out. The two umpires make their way onto the field, followed by Jamie Overton and Jonny Bairstow. A fella dressed as the Pope applauds from the stands.

    I love Test cricket.

  12. How's stat?!published at 10:56 British Summer Time 25 June 2022

    Andy Zaltzman

Should I jinx a potential stat? If Jamie Overton gets the 11 runs needed to reach 100 he will become only the second England player to take a wicket and score a century on their Test debut since WG Grace in the first ever Test match played in this country in 1888.

Jonny Bairstow was asked in his press conference last night whether Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum had anything to say at tea about how to approach the final session.

    "Nope," he said plainly.

"Literally there wasn't anything said," he added after an awkward pause.

I wonder what, if anything, has been said this morning. McCullum has had a good look at the pitch before play.

There are more fluffy clouds around today and I'd say it's cooler than the last couple of days. It doesn't feel like there's any threat of rain, however.

A few days ago, it was forecasted to rain for parts of this Test. We got away with it yesterday and (whisper it quietly) it looks as if we could have another dry one today. Our man at the ground, Matthew Henry, can tell us more.

  20. What did you miss on day two?published at 10:45 British Summer Time 25 June 2022

    Yesterday was, well, ridiculous.

New Zealand were bowled out for 329. A combination of exceptional bowling, particularly from Trent Boult, coupled with England giving their wickets away resulted in the hosts falling to 55-6.

Then, quite remarkably, Jonny Bairstow and debutant Jamie Overton fought back in sensational fashion.

They shared an unbeaten stand of 209 runs off 223 balls as England ended the day on 264-6.

    Madness.

Rather than me telling you the ins and outs, have a ganders at this.
