That's a glorious shot for four. It was aerial but it was straight and hit so firmly.
Target 334
Nortje's second ball is a casual 88mph and traps Jason Roy on the front pad, but it's going down leg.
Bairstow then drills him down the ground for a perfectly timed boundary when Nortje tries to take the pace off. Maybe stick to trying to hit the 90s.

Yeah, he's fast, isn't he?

Jimmy. Anrich Nortje, what do you make of him?
This won't be slow, though!
Here's Anrich Nortje.
Target 334
An excellent recovery from Lungi Ngidi who executes his slower balls perfectly for the remainder of the over.
The slower bowling looks much harder to get away so it's a good tactic from the South Africans.

If Ngidi had diverted it onto the stumps, Roy was in trouble.

First sign of real aggression from Jonny Bairstow there. He's not timed it by any stretch but enough for four.
It was going to hit the stumps at the other end but Ngidi got a boot on it and sent it just past them.
Now then, what's this hit?
Bairstow has had enough of singles and thumps Lungi Ngidi down the ground for four.
It clips off the bowler's foot and just past the stumps. Had it hit, Roy was long gone! More fortune for England.

Maharaj is making himself difficult to get away. That one six aside, they've struggled to get him off the square.
Target 334
We had some rain and thunderstorms in Cardiff earlier (I know, don't be too jealous) but now the heat has caught up with us. It's hotter now than it was at midday.
Credit to these players. I think they'll sleep well tonight.
Target 334
Careful, Jonny.
He dabs and runs, but David Miller is rapid running in from mid-off and with a direct hit he'd have been gone.
England taking a few early risks here.

It was just a half-prod into the off-side. It wasn't overly attacking but you do need a bit of luck. We saw a few inside edges in the South Africa innings so England will feel they're due a few.
Well, they always say you need a bit of luck!
Roy gets a thick inside edge that chops just past his stumps and runs away for four.

I'm just back from another lap of the ground. It's still very hot but we may be through the worst of it.
Target 334
That six certainly helped ease the pressure of some of the dot balls that were building.
Jason Roy hasn't been in great form. Is today his day?

The ball has been smashed high and long - and that is the first six of the match. Roy got down on one knee and slapped it over the leg-side.
South Africa didn't hit a single six in their 50 overs but Jason Roy has one already.
Keshav Maharaj had bowled eight dot balls at Roy and he'd had enough. Down on one knee, slog swept into the stands.
Casual.

Lots of noise from the South African fielders, they're keeping the energy up. They've had the best of conditions so far.
