Today was the first time we've seen Janneman Malan play against England and he set up nicely at the top of the order.

He played some nice shots in his 57, before he pulled Moeen Ali to deep mid-wicket.

England got a big early breakthrough as Sam Curran's slower ball deceived Quinton de Kock and crashed into the top of middle stump.

  5. 'It did feel a bit like an oven'published at 17:00 British Summer Time 19 July 2022

South Africa batter Janneman Malan on Sky Sports: "Us South Africans are used to this weather, but it did feel a bit like an oven out there.

"We knew we could get a good start from the first 10 overs so we wanted to make the most of the fielders in and the hard ball.

"Rassie [van der Dussen] came in and had a great innings. He carried the partnership with me.

"The square boundaries are very big and there is some up and down bounce. But it is a good wicket, it might just slow down a bit as we go on.

"I haven't been to England in a while, but our two warm-up games have been good and it's lovely to have such a big crowd in.

"I think we've got enough runs. I back our boys to bowl well and we'll back them up in the field."

The whole England team waited to allow Ben Stokes to lead them from the field. Stokes' team-mates stood and applauded as he walked up the steps to the dressing room in his final ODI.

The Durham all-rounder handed his cap to a kid in the crowd on the way up.

Brydon Carse was brilliant at the death there. He conceded just 12 runs from the 48th and 50th over.

It isn't a role you'd expect him to play in this side - we're used to seeing him in the middle overs - but he's done it superbly today.

  10. SA 333-5published at 50 overs

A brilliant end from Brydon Carse as he finishes with another dot ball as the slower ball again confuses David Miller.

England will need 334 to win the first ODI.

  11. SA 333-5published at 49.5 overs

    Dot ball.

A slower ball goes into the body of David Miller.

  12. SA 333-5published at 49.4 overs

    Shot!

Ben Stokes was really wide at long-on - almost protecting mid-wicket - and that allows David Miller to drill a straight drive away for four.

Brydon Carse just slightly missed his yorker there.

For long periods of this game it has felt like the crowd has been too beaten up by the weather to properly celebrate or cheer.

In the last couple of overs we've just had two renditions of "Jonny Bairstow you are the love of my life" from a small group in one of the stands.
