  1. SA 161-2published at 29 overs

More spin for England, Liam Livingstone is into the attack for the first time today.

After four singles from the first five balls, Markram thrashes the last through point but is denied a boundary by some excellent fielding from Sam Curran.

That was a lot of effort in this heat but he did save a run.

When we go abroad to hot countries like Sri Lanka, India or Dubai, we tend to get given ice towels to put around our necks in the breaks.

I've never got the umbrella, though.

  3. SA 153-2published at 28 overs

Moeen rattles his way through another over, this one costing just the four, all in singles.

The spinners have done a decent job of slowing the scoring rate in the past few overs, albeit it you feel that South Africa are just trying to position themselves for a big finish.

The Durham staff have been to a local warehouse store to bulk buy big bottles of water.

They're doing what they can but I think it's fair to say there's a bit of concern about the safety of the spectators given the temperatures.

Jos Buttler will want Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali to bowl 20 overs between them today. It'll be crucial to just allow them to get through the day.

That's not good signs for England, it's spinning and gripping already. Tabraiz Shamsi will like the look of that.

  7. SA 149-2published at 27 overs

Good ball to finish the over from Rashid, turn and bounce and Van der Dussen belatedly withdraws his bat as the ball fizzes past him.

We're told Matthew Potts is off the field because of the effects of the heat. England are assessing him.

  9. SA 145-2published at 26 overs

A successful return for Moeen. A wicket and two runs from it.

Aiden Markram is the new batter for South Africa.

That's a strange shot, we've not really seen that type of aggression from either of the batters. I think he was trying to hit it straighter than that.

    England needed that wicket.

Janneman Malan was trying to clear the biggest boundary. He got hold of it but he didn't get the distance.

    Malan c Livingstone b Moeen 57 (SA 144-2)

A much-needed breakthrough for England! Moeen Ali strikes in his first over back.

Malan was down the pitch and tried to clear the deep mid-wicket boundary. They are big boundaries square, though, and Liam Livingstone is there to take the catch a yard or two off the rope.

What we're watching now feels like old school 50 over cricket. We're in the accumulation phase, ticking at four an over and just waiting for them to go big.

That's a safe shot. It was tossed up nice and full by Rashid but the field was in so it's a good option to hit over the top.

  15. SA 143-1published at 25 overs

Only a touch too full from Rashid but that is all Van der Dussen needs to belt it back over the bowler's head for four.

Halfway through the innings and South Africa are making hay as England put the hard yards in in the heat.

I imagine there are players out there who are thinking they're going to choose between being a white-ball player or a red-ball player.

When I grew up Test match cricket was the pinnacle but the white ball game has just changed so much.

In terms of Ben, he's got the Test captaincy and the schedule this year especially where we're still catching up with Covid cancellations, and he's got to manage his own body.

He wants to give absolutely everything on the field and if he's holding back even a slight bit, he won't like it. I can completely understand his decision.

  17. SA 135-1published at 24 overs

    Malan 55, vd Dussen 53

Malan is back up and able to push for a single when play restarts.

Van der Dussen then drives nicely through the covers, it is stopped on the rope but they get back for two and that is the 100 partnership.

  18. Postpublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 19 July 2022

We're still waiting for play to resume with Malan getting looked at. It does seem that he is going to be OK to continue, though, and he has batted very nicely so far.

It’s very uncomfortable around the ground.

There are people sat on pavements behind the stands and below the big screens, just trying to find any shade they can.

In fairness the staff are trying to do as much as they can. I’ve just passed an area where water is being shared out from big containers. The queues for the water fountains are longer than the bars.
