Chris Mitchell: First two series lost. Humiliated at Durham by South Africa and not a single contribution with the bat in five innings. We need to talk about Jos. Our one world class white ball batter shouldn’t be burdened with the captaincy. End of.

The ball is just gripping in the pitch a lot more now. It's not easy to time it.

  3. Eng 168-4published at 33 overs

    Target 334

A tidy start from Dwaine Pretorius, conceding just four from his first over.

The required run-rate is 9.76 now - it'll be in double figures before we know it.

Yes, it undoubtedly would have. But these players have all played around the world in the IPL or in the UAE and they are used to different conditions.

It is a factor but England would have been prepared for it. They won't want to use it as an excuse if they don't win today.

Shall we call it 50 runs, Aatif?

120 from 18 overs would be a lot more achievable.

It has got to count for something that England were stood in the field for three and a half hours earlier.

    Hmmmm.

England have opted to send Liam Livingstone in above Moeen Ali today. Those two switched depending on the situation in the India series.

We're going to see concussion sub Dwaine Pretorius have a bowl too. At least the tape-measure delay earlier wasn't for nothing.

That's an outstanding return catch for Shamsi. He's off balance in his follow through so it's quite an unnatural position for him.

There is still a lot of batting to come for England but there is a lot to do. The run rate is up to 9.44.

That one just gripped a bit more and Jos Buttler got into a horrible position.

Shamsi was onto it like a flash.

    Buttler c & b Shamsi 12 (Eng 164-4)

Oh, England are in the mire again.

Jos Buttler looks to get down the pitch to Tabraiz Shamsi, but the left-arm spinner follows him and cramps him for room.

An inside edge goes into the pad and loops up for a return catch. It is a good grab because Shamsi has to lunge forward.

England still need 170... it feels a long way away at the moment.

Jos Buttler was just waiting for that fuller one he could really put his hands through.

Mark Wood is also on the TV coverage today. He's revealing some trade secrets about Jos Buttler's left-shoulder wiggle.

It means he's going to clear the front leg and smash away.

He does it once to pick up a single, before clearing mid-off for a gorgeous one-bounce four.

    A change for South Africa.

Tabraiz Shamsi replaces Aiden Markram, who picked up the wicket of Jonny Bairstow.

Just 11 runs came from Maharaj's last four overs, and they were all singles. A fantastic effort.

It's so important to get that boundary early in the over, particularly in this heat. It's not a pitch where you can play the big, booming, get out of jail free card-type shots.

  16. Eng 156-3published at 31 overs

    Target 334

What a spell of bowling from Keshav Maharaj.

He finishes with 1-42 from his 10 overs. England just haven't been able to get him away at all.

    Here's the wicket he took...

The sun is not bearing down on them any more but it's still very hot. This is where they can perhaps try to enjoy the evening a little bit more.

Classy shot, again didn't try to overhit it. Almost like a golfer with a sand wedge he just lifted it.

  19. Eng 153-3published at 30 overs

    Target 334

Good use of the feet again from Joe Root as he plonks Aiden Markram over mid-off for a two-bounce four. He perhaps didn't get to the pitch of that ball, but with the field up it is relatively low risk.

The run-rate is above nine for the first time. It's up to 9.05 now.

The worm shows England are 14 runs behind South Africa. England are 153 for 3 after 30 overs. At the same stage South Africa were 167 for 2.Image source, BBC Sport
