Jamie Watson: Can’t quite work out what the game plan was from England for this chase… no real intent shown early doors, no real intent to move the fielders around. Slow amble to an inevitable rising run rate. Poor.

South Africa haven't dominated the game, but they have quietly outplayed England. They have adapted better to the conditions and been very efficient.

  3. Eng 196-5published at 37 overs

    Target 334

Moeen Ali is in and gets off the mark with a two guided down to third.

One of those every ball would be more than enough for England. Sadly, the next ball is patted back to the bowler.

    James Anderson
England bowler on Test Match Special

England have left themselves too much to do. They've been really cautious, especially in the powerplay.

But they haven't been able to kick on from that platform. It's a huge ask to go at more than 10 an over with five wickets left.

The noise is very low in the crowd now. I think they were hoping Livingstone would give them a lift.

That did stay a bit low, but he got a bit excited and completely took his eye off the ball.

    Livingstone b Ngidi 10 (Eng 194-5)

Dragged on! Livingstone had tried to move into top gear, really swinging at every ball in the over but only made a strong connection with one.

On this occasion, he moves across his stumps and tries to heave it leg-side but can only drag it onto his stumps.

    England's chances are fading fast.

  7. Eng 194-4published at 36.2 overs

It might have crept up a smidge now as Livingstone smears the ball over mid-off and away for four!

It looks like now it is the time for England.

Liam Livingstone has come in during a lot of tricky positions for England this summer. We haven't seen him with the opportunity to play with his usual freedom.

  10. Eng 190-4published at 36 overs

    Target 334

Very good again from Shamsi, England have found it very tough to get him away - he's conceded only one boundary in his six overs.

That required rate just keeps climbing.

    A very Root-ian innings. 50 from 50 balls.

A couple of ducks against India but he's back on song. A valuable knock.

  13. 50 runs

50 for Joe Rootpublished at 35.4 overs

    Target 334

A return to form for the former Test skipper as he brings up his 36th fifty in ODIs - with 16 hundreds to boot.

He gets there with a reverse sweep for one, he's gone at exactly a run a ball.

Thanks, Callum. England need 151 more runs from 15 overs - that will take some getting!

They did show the first signs of starting up the ante in the last over and if they get anywhere close, we're in for a very entertaining next hour or so.

The worm shows England are 24 runs behind South Africa. England are 183 for 4 after 35 overs. At the same stage South Africa were 207 for 2.Image source, BBC Sport

That was a lovely shot, it's very smart from Root to use the pace of the ball and help it on its way when he knows that it's harder to hit down the ground.

  16. Eng 183-4published at 35 overs

    Target 334

    Oh lovely.

Joe Root has played the reverse ramp/flick/scoop, whatever you want to call it, so well this summer and he does it again to bring up a much-needed boundary for England.

Nine from the over. That's a bit more like it.

Time for a change in the hot seat. Sam Drury will take you through the remainder of the game.

The last five overs have gone for just 27 runs.

  19. Eng 174-4published at 34 overs

    Target 334

Another really tidy over from Tabraiz Shamsi, conceding just six.

England need 160 from 16 overs - the required run-rate is now exactly 10.

They feel a long, long way away.

You mean Jos Buttler who was England's highest scorer in the first and third ODI against India, Chris?

There are some problems with this England side at the moment but I'm not sure Buttler's batting being affected by the captaincy is one of them.
