The key here is that Joe Root hasn't tried to overhit it. He's just waited and used his feet to get there and picked his gap perfectly.

    He executed it so well.

  3. Eng 231-6published at 42 overs

    Target 334

Pummelled leg-side by Root! He's down the pitch to Shamsi again, gets nowhere neat the pitch but adjusts and clubs the ball away over mid-wicket.

Two more follow with a pull from the next, 12 from the over. Time for a late charge?

    Probably not.

That's fallen perfectly in the middle of a Bermuda triangle of fielders.

  5. Eng 221-6published at 41.1 overs

Leading edge from Root off Shamsi and looks for all the world that that'll be that for him. But no! Somehow it lands safely as three fielders converge.

It's the length that South Africa have bowled that has been the key. They've been very consistent, both seamers and spinners and it's been really impressive.

  7. Eng 218-6published at 41 overs

Sam Curran is swinging like rusty gate out there. The effort is there but he's not come close to finding the middle of the bat just yet.

Just four runs from Ngidi's over. South Africa are going about closing this one out very well.

Chris Ward: Here’s a probably a bit knee-jerk but also kinda makes sense when you think about it suggestion…Joe Root for England white ball captain?

If the pitch was still a belter, 334 would still be doable. It might not be easy but it would be possible.

But the pitch just seems to have slowed down too much and the bounce is getting very uneven.

The worm shows England are 29 runs behind South Africa. England are 215 for 6 after 40 overs. At the same stage South Africa were 244 for 2.Image source, BBC Sport

That's why he's one of the best players of spin in the world. He uses his feet brilliantly.

  11. Eng 215-6published at 40 overs

    Target 334

Top shot from Joe Root! He's not giving this up just yet, even if everybody else is.

Down the track to Shamsi and hit carts it back over the bowler's head for six! That's a sweet strike.

Rashid, Carse and Potts can all hold a bat but if England are going to get anywhere near it, most of the work has to be done be these two.

    But it looks so unlikely.

South Africa have been very sharp in the field.

  15. Eng 207-6published at 39 overs

    Target 334

It has been a very unusual England performance, at least for anyone who has only seen them play white-ball cricket since 2015. For those watching in the years prior to that it is almost nostalgic.

Anyway, Root is still doing what he does and has done throughout England's success in this format over the last few years, scoring around a run a ball. There just hasn't been the big hitting from those around him today.

  17. Eng 200-6published at 38 overs

    Target 334

The 200 is up, Joe Root is in but England need a miracle now.

Sam Curran is the new batter for the home side.

The run-rate has just been creeping steadily. I don't think England have ever been up with it so they've left themselves too much to do, which is a shame.

At halfway we didn't think 333 was enough, but South Africa have bowled very well.

That's the pressure of the situation, it brought the big shot out. It was a steepling catch but well taken.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 37.4 overs

    Moeen c Pretorius b Shamsi 3 (Eng 199-6)

Top-edged sweep and caught at mid-wicket. The fielder at deep mid-wicket was brought up to tempt Moeen into the shot, the England man gave it a go but a bit of extra bounce did for him. The ball went straight up.

Strangely, the last two wickets have been more what we expect from England in white-ball cricket, they don't die wondering.
