Bringing Moeen on early is a good option, nice and aggressive, but unfortunately the slip only lasted one ball.

And the next one flies exactly to where he'd have been.

Eeeek. Van der Dussen edges Moen Ali second ball to a vacant first-slip. The edge disappears for four and England have their heads in their hands.

Joe Root had been moved from slip the ball before.

It doesn't look like it's going to be a 300 plus pitch. They've probably already worked out that if they can get to 250, that's a good score.

When he does time them, De Kock is such a good player to watch.

Time for some spin. Moeen Ali has the ball.

Van der Dussen gets off strike with a punchy single through the covers.

De Kock tries to cut the next delivery but can't quite get it through the field.

So that's a wicket and just one run conceded off David Willey's third over.

I just saw the replay again. It was wide outside off stump and he was trying to hit it too straight down the ground, his hand coming off the bat as it took the leading edge.

The rest of the South African batters will have noticed that and observed the pace of the pitch.

Rassie van der Dussen is in at three for South Africa. Willey has him blocking with two in-swingers to start.

Malan can't quite believe what he's done. He had itchy feet.

He timed a couple in the previous over, got his confidence up and tried for one too many. That ball just wasn't there to play that expansive shot to.

It didn't look like Malan timed it at all but that's just how quick the outfield is.

Oh, that's lovely.

Janneman Malan comes down the pitch to Reece Topley, gest to the pitch of the ball and drives beautifully through mid-off for his first boundary.

Oh, he's gone again.

Fully on the charge this time and Topley sees him coming so goes short and wide but Malan but clubs it over mid-off. That's good low-risk batting.

England won't have a target in mind yet but they will be swarming the batters, trying to stop everything. Every run is so crucial when you know you're going to be chasing on a wearing pitch.

David Willey responds well after the boundary, with just a single conceded from the rest of the over.

This has been a steady start from England so far.

It looks quite difficult to time the ball on this pitch but De Kock has worked that out and is waiting much better for the ball to come to him now.

Too straight from David Willey and Quinton de Kock clips it to the legside boundary for the first four of the innings.
