Anderson starts with a big in-swinger to Keegan Petersen, who just about gets his bat down in time.

The England bowler tries the same ball again but this time it is slightly off line and Petersen's whips it away off his pads for four. Lovely shot.

That explains why England have bowled so many on the pads.

It's Jimmy's first wicket as a 40-year-old - he'll hate me for saying that! Elgar tried to knock it away with his bat but wasn't quick enough.

Sometimes as a batsman you are unlucky. And that is an unlucky dismissal.

I think that's been caught up in his pad! Anderson has the breakthrough.

    Elgar b Anderson 47 (SA 85-1)

How is your luck, Dean Elgar!? A bizarre dismissal but England won't care.

Angled in at the stumps by Jimmy Anderson, Elgar gets a bit of a tangle and the ball comes back off his thigh pad, into his forearm and then trickles back onto the stumps.

So unlucky but he has to go and England, finally, have a breakthrough.

It's been very un-Englandlike since lunch. I don't know whether that's because of the attacking field.

  7. SA 84-0published at 22 overs

    Elgar 47, Erwee 30

Elgar moves into the 40s with a back-foot punch that runs away, up the hill for four.

Four more to end the over, this one goes away finer and despite Ollie Pope's best effort and the ball never actually hitting the boundary sponge, the ball rolls back to where the sponge was before Pope moved it with his dive. That is four.

It's a double bowling change: Ben Stokes takes over from Matthew Potts at the Nursery End.

  10. SA 75-0published at 21 overs

Last ball of the over and Anderson changes it up with an in-swinger to Elgar. It's too wide of off, though, and is left well alone.

There's a bit of chat at the end of the over, too. Anderson has a smile on his face, at least to start with.

  11. SA 73-0published at 20.1 overs

So close! First ball from Anderson and it is a beauty.

Around the wicket to Elgar, angling in at the stumps before moving away late to beat the edge.

Elgar was nowhere near it. Too good from England's record wicket-taker.

England need a wicket - and fast. Here comes Jimmy Anderson.

@meskellglen: England had a slightly higher runs-per-over rate (only one run) but perhaps that has been the issue this Test so far. England are pushing too much to make something happen, instead of being more patient. South Africa appear leisurely and calm in comparison.

I thought Ben Stokes might have bowled this over in place of Matthew Potts. He likes to bowl at the Nursery End.

  15. SA 73-0published at 20 overs

Potts is going at six-an-over after a rather expensive stint post-lunch. Four more come from this over but they won't count against his figures, leg byes as another wayward delivery brushes the pads and slides down the leg side.

There have been five boundaries in the 20 balls Potts had bowled since lunch.

Potts strays again and Elgar is only too happy to flick the ball away through square leg for another boundary.

England don't like this ball, but the umpire cares not what they like. He's thrown it back to Broad.

The seagull has taken up a post-lunch position in the outfield. Deep extra cover or long leg, depending on which end the bowling is from. Sitting down again. England could ask it to field at second slip.

Another delivery snakes past Elgar's edge as he prods at it but still no nick.

The next ball does come off the edge as Broad continues to attack from around the wicket but it drops well short of Pope at gully. The fielder then hits the stumps with his shy but Elgar was back in his ground.

Just a little bit of encouragement for England.
