Just the occasional sign of some variable bounce in this surface. Potts gets one to scuttle through to Foakes behind the stumps and then ends the over with one that jumps a little at Erwee.

South Africa will be batting last, England need to do enough that any demons in the surface on days four and five are a factor.

Halfway through this extended session and still just the one wicket for England.

Matthew Potts will take the ball for the first over after drinks.

Oh hello! After playing and missing at an out-swinger then being deceived by an in-swinger, Keegan Petersen takes a wild swipe at the penultimate delivery of the Anderson over.

A real rush of blood that brings a big smile from Joe Root at first slip!

The batter settles down to leave the last. A maiden from Anderson and the players will take drinks.

Just one from Stokes' latest over. He ends it with a bouncer to Erwee, who hasn't looked entirely comfortable against the short stuff.

Unfortunately for England, they don't really have anyone particularly suited to bowling a sustained spell of bumpers. Well, certainly not when Stokes' knee remains a concern.

It's OK, Matt, I might even go as far as quite nice. I'm not sure it warrants phenomenon status but that's just one man's opinion...

Another over goes by without much incident. That will suit South Africa just fine. Just keep batting sensibly and a sizeable first-innings lead should be theirs.

Jimmy Anderson will continue. He's got the only wicket for England so far and it was a rather odd one. Dean Elgar will certainly feel quite hard done by.

The wind is really getting up now. Ben Stokes is scratching his head.

The 100 is up for South Africa as a big in-ducker from Stokes flicks Petersen's pad and races away for four leg byes.

That comes after Petersen plays and misses with an ambitious drive. The South Africa number three looks more uncomfortable against Stokes in this over than he has at any other point of this - admittedly brief, so far - innings.

  14. Postpublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 18 August 2022

Stokes will come in to bowl to Petersen. I'm reminded that these two played together for Durham at the start of the season.

Petersen didn't have the best of times in the North East - he scored just one half-century in his stint there.

  15. SA 98-1published at 25 overs

    Petersen 7, Erwee 37

Petersen has come out and shown some positive intent and no shortage of class, either.

Meanwhile, Erwee is still chugging away and gets a couple more through the covers.

Anderson hits the left-hander on the back leg to end the over, drawing a big appeal but the umpire shakes his head. Not out, it might have been hitting the stumps but it pitched well outside leg.

  17. SA 93-1published at 24 overs

Close! Stokes follows up a couple of short balls with a delivery angled across the left-handed Erwee, who fences at it and comes perilously close to feathering it behind.

He gets a boundary next ball, though. A thick outside edge, wide of the slip cordon and Alex Lees can only take the ball with him over the boundary as he tries to flick it back.

I think Ben Stokes didn't want to slide, because we've seen how much people have been digging up the turf. He could have just tweaked his knee.

  19. Postpublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 18 August 2022

Just before that Elgar wicket, Ben Stokes was hobbling after sliding to field the ball. It doesn't seem to be too much of an issue though because he is coming in to bowl another over.
