Mark Boucher will have prepared his players for short-pitched bowling and they won't be fazed by it. It will have been a talking point going into this series.

Nortje does indeed have to face up to a few bumpers from Stokes.

There first couple aren't quite on target and the South Africa tailender can easily get out of the way of them, but the third follows him and Nortje has to fend it off, just keeping it away from Pope at short leg.

One more over until the second new ball is available.

Did anyone really think Broad was catching that? The best grab of his career?

  5. SA 290-8published at 78.3 overs

The field is spread for Marco Jansen but there is a slip in place and Stokes is taking a more traditional approach, full and around the off stump.

Jansen turns the third ball of the over to leg, though. I fancy Nortje might get a bit of short stuff.

I'm not one to give fashion advice but that's a sensational suit.

Vernon, how would you describe the suit you are wearing?

Short, short, short. Potts is giving new batter Anrich Nortje nothing in his own half.

That ploy worked for Rabada after a rather impressive helping hand from Stuart Broad.

Ben Stokes will bowl from the Pavilion End.

What a catch! Brilliance from Stuart Broad!

Short again from Potts, Rabada takes on the pull shot and catches it pretty well but Broad takes a couple of steps back at mid-wicket and then throws himself into the air, sticking his right-arm above his head and clings on to a stunning one-handed grab!

    Just the start England needed.

  14. SA 289-7published at 77.1 overs

A short ball from Potts to start with and Rabada sways out of the way. I think we know how England are going to approach things this morning then, at least until they take the second new ball...

I was very impressed with Marco Jansen. It took him about 40 balls to get five or six but then he played very nicely to start taking the game away from England, who can't let them get 160, 170 ahead this morning.

The players are making their way out to the middle now. Matthew Potts will bowl the first over of the day. This should be an exciting day of Test cricket.

England batter Ollie Pope to BBC TMS: "We haven't had our strongest two days but we have shown this summer what we can do when we are in a position where there isn't necessarily a game to win and there is a 100% full belief that we can come back into this game.

"It was an up and down last session, it was a sunny day and the pitch is better at Lord's when the sun is out and with a 70 over-old ball South Africa took advantage. It doesn't necessarily mean the game has slipped away at all as we back ourselves to drag this back.

"Ben Stokes put in a serious stint but he is used to that. He is a bit of an animal to be honest, he just keeps going.

"The mood is high throughout. We have made it pretty clear how we want to play our Test cricket and whatever the situation we are always going to see the positives. Test cricket is played over five days, there will always be ups and downs. Hopefully we can have a great day today and get back on the front foot."

The reason that England are still clinging on in this game is largely down to the captain.

Ben Stokes took two wickets in two overs to remove Sarel Erwee and Rassie van der Dussen before returning to get rod of Keshav Maharaj late in the day.
