SA 98-3published at 41 overs
Busy from Keegan Petersen, charging Jack Leach but he can't get a shot away. Good footwork though from the number three, though he misses out on a full toss as he slaps straight to mid on.

The ball must be older now and South Africa will be thinking about that. The first 40 overs it's particularly potent and now, not so much.
South Africa get to 40 overs three men down, they would probably have taken that a few hours go as Rassie van der Dussen defends stoutly from the nagging accuracy of James Anderson.
What would Allan Donald do?
Keegan Petersen is on strike so RVDD's digits are safe at the moment as James Anderson plunders away. That's a lovely shot too, driven for a couple, they run three in fact.

Steve L: I know it is brutal, but Test cricket is brutal ... shouldn't England be bowling straight and at Van der Dussen's gloves?

Bairstow just managed it. Earnestly and sincerely saved the boundary. He had to dive over the rope and put the paw on it. Who knows how crucial that run will be.
Huge cheers from the temp stand as Jonny Bairstow sprints away to save four, just about. Jack Leach rattles through an over with Keegan Petersen looking adept off the back foot.
AKA 'The Fresh Prince of Big Air.'
Superb.

Wonderful fives chat. You've certainly served up a smorgasbord of sporting icons today.
Rassie van der Dussen has to take his left hand off the bat after every stroke, not ideal when facing one of the best to ever hold the ball. He's clinging in there, straight and firm in defence.
RVDD then digs out a yorker superbly to nick a single before Keegan Petersen wears one in the most painful of zones possible. Anderson off to a fine start.

Danny Cullinane: Less well known, the hugely impressive Wayne Enstone, who was national fives champion for the first time aged 21 in 1973, and was still winning it over 20 years later in the mid-1990s. Great player, great guy.
SA 90-3
A huge cheer as Sir James Anderson takes the ball. Looks as pumped up as ever. Good luck, Rassie van der Dussen and his broken finger.
SA 90-3
Jack Leach will have a tweak first up, South Africa still need 174 to draw level. Chip away, chip away...

Surely no discussion of middle aged sporting greats is complete without Serena Williams? About to retire after 23 years of dominance and changed women's tennis.

Here come the umpires, and now Rassie van der Dussen strides out with purpose. Wonder what was on the lunch menu today?
It was Joe Root's first series as captain of England the last time South Africa came over, with England winning that four-match run 3-1.
There are just three this time around and it's looking likely to be 1-1 heading to the Oval...
Once more?
Yeah, go on...
Anyone who's been on TMS will probably be a uesful foil in your average pub quiz, I'd reckon...

You never wanted to come up against Peter White's team in the Hampshire Chronicle Pub Quiz! Think he played for the First Inn Last Out who always stuffed The Ship Inn Owslebury when he was playing! Utmost respect.
