  1. Eng 145-6published at 31.5 overs

Kagiso Rabada bowls an absolute beauty to Ben Foakes, that pitches on leg stump and somehow nips past his outside edge. It just evades both the stump and Foakes' bat.

There would be few complaints if he got out to a ball like that.

Stuart Broad has scored 133 runs this Test summer, his most productive summer since 2015.

He has had six summers where he has scored more than 200 runs, including his first four as a Test player where he averaged 39 from 24 matches.

  3. Eng 142-6published at 31 overs

    Lead by 24

Stuart Broad signals his intent with a couple of steps down the pitch and a big swing at Nortje. He completely misses.

He connects with the next one, but finds the fielder at mid-off.

  4. Eng 141-6published at 30.3 overs

Ben Foakes clips one for four off his hips as Anrich Nortje just strays down the leg side.

  5. Not outpublished at 30 overs

    Eng 137-6

Stuart Broad just slides his bat over the crease in time.

  6. Umpire reviewpublished at 30 overs

The square leg umpire is taking a look at a possible run out.

It's a straightforward single, but Stuart Broad is a little hesitant in getting his bat down. Dean Elgar gets a direct hit, but doesn't seem too excited.

  7. Postpublished at 18:06 British Summer Time 10 September 2022

Anrich Nortje dismissed England captain Ben Stokes for just six for his first wicket of the day.

I don't think there will be much speculation about the way Stuart Broad will bat.

  9. Eng 135-6published at 29 overs

Ben Foakes takes a couple of singles off a tidy Nortje over. It will be interesting to see how Stuart Broad approaches this innings.

Theoretically, play can go on until 19:30 BST but it's unlikely, given the light. Half of the ground is in sunshine now but it could go dark pretty quickly after the sun goes down.

Here's how Harry Brook was dismissed on his Test debut.

  11. Eng 133-6published at 28 overs

    Lead by 15

Stuart Broad joins Ben Foakes in the middle.

It is hard to believe we have almost got through two innings already in one day.

Pope looks furious at himself for playing a ball that he didn't need to.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 27.4 overs

    Pope c Verreyne b Rabada 67 (Eng 133-6)

Oh dear. England's innings is unravelling.

Rabada has struggled for consistency today but he gets Pope with a good ball that the batter just prods at uncertainly outside off stump and the edge goes through to the keeper.

South Africa are delighted but England are struggling now.

  15. Eng 133-5published at 27.2 overs

Ollie Pope clips Rabada off his legs for four more.

He has played very nicely. Here's how he reached his half-century earlier.

We are averaging a wicket every 4.1 overs. Absolutely extraordinary.

  17. Eng 129-5published at 27 overs

    Lead by 11

Ben Foakes is the new batter.

It was another strange innings from Stokes, after playing with such composure for his century in the last Test match.

I tell you what, South Africa will start believing now.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 26.5 overs

    Stokes c Erwee b Nortje 6 (Eng 129-5)

    Gone this time.

Another big drive from Stokes takes the outside edge, and with Nortje's pace that flies rapidly to Sarel Erwee at slip, but he takes it comfortably in the end.

South Africa are back in the game.

What an opportunity. Dean Elgar put in the big dive but didn't even get a hand on it.

Those are the chances you have to take in a low scoring game.
