  1. Eng 128-4published at 26.2 overs

Oh, Ben Stokes almost gives his wicket away.

He takes a huge swing at Anrich Nortje, the ball flying high into the air over mid-off as one hand comes off the bat.

Dean Elgar puts in a brilliant effort running backwards and dives full stretch, but doesn't manage to get a hand on it in the end.

It's a clear intent of how Stokes wants to play, but was unable to execute it at all.

That is Ollie Pope's 11th Test fifty including two centruries. It is also his fourth in his last six Tests having had one 50+ score in his previous 13.

Pope also has a great record against South Africa, averaging around 70 against the Proteas compared to 25 against all other teams combined.

  3. Eng 127-4published at 26 overs

    Lead by 9

Four more to Ollie Pope, much more convincingly this time as he clips Rabada for four through mid-wicket. Keshav Maharaj puts in a good chase but the ball wins, and England narrowly stretch their lead.

Keegan Petersen has excellent reflexes but he needed to grow a few inches to get to that one.

  5. Eng 123-4published at 25.2 overs

Another less-than-convincing boundary for Pope as he's squared up in his crease by Kagiso Rabada and the ball flies over Keegan Petersen in the slips.

Marco Jansen probably would've caught it easily.

  6. Eng 118-4published at 25 overs

Pope drives one out to the cover boundary for two runs and that brings the scores level.

Ben Stokes is the big wicket for South Africa, though you also have to give credit to Ollie Pope, who has scored at a really good rate.

    Eng 116-4

A fine half-century for Ollie Pope on his home ground.

It doesn't come in the most convincing fashion, top-edging a pull shot over the keeper's head for four, but it's been another impressive innings from England's young number three.

England's deficit is just two runs now.

It is perfect conditions now for seam bowling. The floodlights are on and there is cloud cover overheard.

  10. Eng 112-4published at 24 overs

    Trail by 6

All of a sudden batting just looks that little bit more difficult, as Kagiso Rabada gets one to jag backthrough Stokes' defence.

But Stokes responds with a flashing drive for four. A nice contest brewing here.

  11. Eng 107-4published at 23 overs

    Trail by 11

Captain Ben Stokes solidly defends his first ball.

    This could get interesting now.

Harry Brook will be gutted with that shot. It was not the best delivery by Marco Jansen, it was a loose ball down the leg side.

South Africa have got they wicket they wanted. This game is moving forward at a rapid pace.

    Brook c Rabada b Jansen 12 (Eng 107-4)

Marco Jansen has his fourth! Harry Brook tries to kick things on after the delay and whips the ball off his hips with real flair.

It looks like it's going for six, but instead lands safely in Kagiso Rabada's hands at deep square leg.

He played some lovely shots but he looks disappointed to get out in that way on Test debut.

  14. Eng 107-3published at 22.1 overs

Marco Jansen resumes, and he currently has 3-28.

Harry Brook leaves the first ball alone outside off stump.

The game has moved so fast South Africa just have to try and get wickets rather than keep it tight.

We can in theory play until 7.30pm this evening, but that theory is challenged by light and the laws of physics unfortunately.

Ollie Pope has never batted three in first class cricket, so it was quite a big thing to elevate him to that role.

I think very highly of him and is every inch an England player who will have a long and successful career. But when you pick a young player you want to give them the circumstances where it is more likely to be successful rather than in spite of.

So for Harry Brook I don't think his preparation over the last four weeks have been ideal, though he has so far looked very competent.

I an speculating a bit but I think Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes are happy to throw in a player they rate in both talent and temperament, who they think would be able to handle the spotlight of international cricket.

The full covers are just being brought on now. The grey clouds have eased a little overhead but the conditions are still gloomy.
