  1. Most Test wicketspublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 10 September 2022

    1. Muttiah Muralitharan (SL) - 800
    2. Shane Warne (Aus) - 708
    3. James Anderson (Eng) - 665
    4. Anil Kumble (Ind) - 619
    5. Glenn McGrath (Aus) & Stuart Broad (Eng) - 563

Stuart Broad is level with Glenn McGrath on 563 wickets - when the great Australian left the scene I never thought another quick bowler would get near him but now we are near to two surpassing his tally.

  2. Eng 26-1published at 5 overs

And the Surrey batter does it again off the next delivery, pulling it front of square for his second consecutive four.

Pope knows this pitch very well so he read the bounce perfectly. It's no mean feat to pull Kagiso Rabada for four like that.

  4. Eng 22-1published at 15:21 British Summer Time 10 September 2022

Rabada looks to be in the groove now as he gets Pope prodding outside off, but off the next ball he drops short and Pope hooks him to the square leg boundary.

South Africa's strength really lies with their bowling, so England have got to be wary.

  6. Eng 18-1published at 4.0 overs

Ollie Pope gets off the mark with a nudge, and off the final ball of a good over Crawley wafts away at a loose one down the leg side.

I thought England would come out and try to be busy and aggressive, we know that's how Ben Stokes wants them to play.

South Africa were quite ordinary with the ball to start with.

  8. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 3.1 overs

    Lees b Jansen 13 (Eng 17-1)

    The bails fly!

A great delivery from Marco Jansen whistles through Alex Lees' defences and clips the top of the stumps.

  9. Eng 17-0published at 3.2 overs

That is lovely stuff from Lees as he drives Rabada square for another four, then clips the next ball off his pads for three.

It suddenly looks a much better place to bat.

    Alex Hartley
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

I like this move of Jansen opening the bowling. With his height he could get some really awkward bounce, which we saw from Ollie Robinson.

  11. Not outpublished at 15:06 British Summer Time 10 September 2022

    Eng 7-0

Crawley is revealed to have hit that down into the ground a couple of inches away from the bat, and the opener survives.

Marco Jansen takes the new ball from the other end.

If this is out, my eyes must be deceiving me.

  13. Umpire reviewpublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 10 September 2022

Crawley has edged into the gully and the fielders are convinced it's out. Soft signal is not out, they are reviewing...

That really whistled off the bat of Zak Crawley.

  15. Eng 7-0published at 15:03 British Summer Time 10 September 2022

Zak Crawley is under way with a push back past the bowler to the boundary.

  16. Eng 2-0published at 0.1 overs

And the left-hander is away with a neat nudge off his pads through midwicket.

  17. Postpublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 10 September 2022

Given how England have approached the Tests this summer, and at 1-1 in a shortened game, this is going to be a fascinating session and a half remaining today.

Anyway, Alex Lees is all set to receive the first ball from Kagiso Rabada.

    Jonathan Agnew
BBC cricket correspondent on Test Match Special

Ollie Robinson was brilliant. He's been back to his best this series, or better than that.

  19. How's stat?!published at 14:53 British Summer Time 10 September 2022

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

South Africa have broken the record for the shortest opening innings of an Oval Test match.

The previous record was England against Australia in Don Bradman's last Test in 1948, where they were skittled out for 52 in just 42.1 overs.

It is also the third-shortest South Africa innings when batting first in the first innings of a Test.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 36.2 overs

    Nortje c Stokes b Broad 7 (SA 118)

Nice and easy for the England captain.

Anrich Nortje drives uppishly into the off side, and Ben Stokes lifts up off his feet by a few inches to take another very simple catch, giving Stuart Broad his fourth wicket.

That wicket also takes Broad level with Australia great Glenn McGrath on 563 Test wickets.
