  1. Ind 329-7published at 72.0 overs

A couple of short ones from Ben Stokes to Mohammed Shami. He flashes hard at the first then bobs and weave out of the next one.

Time for one more over, from Matthew Potts. More conventional field with three slips in place.

  2. Ind 329-7published at 71.4 overs

Ravindra Jadeja happy to keep Ben Stokes' first three balls at bay before working the ball off his legs for a single to give Mohammed Shami two to face.

We have had seven centuries at number five or six so far this summer. That's the most ever in an English summer and we are not even halfway through.

Where's that come from? There's the odd one in there, but it is the odd one.

  5. Ind 328-7published at 70.3 overs

About 10 minutes of play left. India's batters happy to delay things a little to get themselves through to day two with their last three wickets in tact.

A beauty from Matthew Potts with his third beats the left-handed Ravindra Jadeja outside his off stump. England on the hunt late in the day.

  6. Not outpublished at 18:47 British Summer Time 1 July 2022

England wicketkeeper Sam Billings was interested, but the technology shows no bat involved. Mohammed Shami survives.

Mohammed Shami didn't look too disturbed, but you never know.

  8. England reviewpublished at 70.0 overs

Ravindra Jadeja eases himself up to 70 as the shadows start to lengthen at Edgbaston to put Mohammed Shami on strike.

Has he gloved one down the leg side? Ben Stokes uses the captain's prerogative to review it.

Arjun Singh: Have we not learned how Baz-ball works? England concede a big number of runs. They collapse in the second innings, take quick wickets in the third and gallop home three down in the fourth innings. Easy.

  10. Ind 324-7published at 68.2 overs

Mohammed Shami is the new batter. Matthew Potts back into the attack and has kept it tight to Ravindra Jadeja with just one run off the over.

Quite a bit of venom in that ball from Ben Stokes. That rose on Shardul Thakur awkwardly.

  13. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 68.0 overs

    Thakur c Billings b Stokes 1 (Ind 323-7)

Ben Stokes finishes his over with a no-ball and "makes use of the extra one" as the club cricket cliche goes.

A short ball from Stokes to Shardul Thakur and as he attempts to fend it off he gloves it and Sam Billings takes a smart catch.

Can England polish off India before the close?

Paul B: Nelson strikes again. Pant's innings lasted 111 balls and the partnership 222 runs.

Rishabh Pant's innings is what I enjoy about Test cricket. Just when you think the game is gone someone can come in and turn the game around in such an entertaining fashion.

At one stage it looked like England had no answers. Outstanding.

  16. Ind 321-6published at 67.3 overs

Rishabh Pant gets plenty of pats on the back when he gets back into the India dressing room. Shardul Thakur is the new batter and he's off the mark quickly with a poke off Joe Root.

Meanwhile, England's cabinet of Brendon McCullum, Paul Collingwood and Jon Lewis are deep in conversation on the balcony.

Despite the new batter Ben Stokes is happy keep the field spread and stick to the same bowling plan. No slips for now.

What an innings it has been from Rishabh Pant. Thrilling and superb. Bringing his side back from the brink of calamity.

    Pant c Crawley b Root 146 (Ind 320-6)

You live by the sword, you die by the sword.

But what a innings from Rishabh Pant attempts a carbon-copy of the shot which sent Joe Root over the boundary sponge, but this time it's a thick-ish edge and it goes into the hands of Zak Crawley

Some knock from Pant, given India's position when he came to the crease.

    Brutal, beautiful and brilliant.

  19. 6 runs

    Ind 320-5published at 66.1 overs

Still 40 odd minutes of play left this evening as Edgbaston is bathed in sunshine.

Joe Root's first ball is dismissively thumped back over his head for six by Rishabh Pant, who has moved on to 146 off 110 balls.
