JayRad: Jasprit Bumrah is one of the best bowlers in world cricket for testing a batsman’s off stump technique. Interesting to see if Zak Crawley can be patient against him.

  2. Eng 14-0published at 2.4 overs

Just as I say that Zak Crawley edges through to Shardul Thakur at third slip but it drops just short and England can run two.

This will be runs, probably four of them! Pujura gives chase but it's futile. Got on top of that nicely and flicked it.

  4. Eng 11-0published at 2.3 overs

Good shot. Zak Crawley plays a nice wristy shot through square leg for four.

That should help settle the England opener down.

Martin Tooth: It’s pretty clear that India have thrown down the gauntlet to England: “If anyone’s going to be the best attacking side in world Test cricket, it’ll be us.” Interesting to see how “new” England respond

You can see why Stokes and McCullum want Crawley to get that score. He's this opener that fits into this new England batting-mould so you can see why they're all willing him on.

  7. Eng 7-0published at 2 overs

Zak Crawley scampers through for a leg bye to bring Alex Lees on strike.

Mohammed Shami then has his head in his hands as an inside edge just misses the top of Lees' stumps and escapes through for a fortunate four.

Big knock for Crawley. Six-weeks till the next Test match.

Mohammed Shami will open at the other end for India.

Zak Crawley, under pressure and in need of a score, will face.

Mark Burt: Stokes is a breath of fresh air but some of his captaincy at the end of that innings was diabolical. The fact legendary bowlers like Broad and Anderson bought in just rubs salt into the wound.

Bumrah has one of those actions that you need to get accustomed to. It's like a bowling machine and it can rush into you quickly.

  12. Eng 2-0published at 1 overs

Jasprit Bumrah, with that wonderful slingy action of his, will open the bowling for India.

Alex Lees gets off the mark with a clip off the pads into the onside for two before leaving a couple of wide ones outside his off stump.

It's still dark overhead but the rain looks to have relented - for now.

Do I see rain or is that just the filmy residue in front of my eyes? I think it's rain.

Prashanth Kunnath: It was great fun to watch and Stokes was laughing in the end, but, England have conceded about 50 to 60 runs more than they should have today morning with some poor tactics!

England have to change how they bat here. They need to be careful. All well and good about going out there and being positive, and giving it a whack, but you could very easily find yourself behind in the game.

Zak Crawley and Alex Lees are in the middle. The India team get into a huddle on the outfield before making their way towards the wicket.

It's a bit grey and gloomy overhead at Edgbaston. India will be eyeing wickets.

You wait 30 overs to get your hands on a new ball then decided you are going to bang it in short against number and 10 and 11. Bizarre. It was beautiful entertainment. Why not just bowl it top of off, nibble it a bit, and try to get them to nick it?

I don't quite understand it. This England side have been guilty of this approach in the past. It's the definition of madness. India's tail end know what is going to come if they keep doing that and how to play it.

  20. Postpublished at 11:38 British Summer Time 2 July 2022

England had India 375-9 and would have been confident of keeping them below 400 before that chaotic finale.

I'm sure they will say conceding 416 is nothing to worry about in this new 'Baz ball' era, but they have made life difficult for themselves.
