A huge day for England tomorrow with the bat. A lot on the shoulders of Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow, and then Sam Billings who hasn't played a lot at this level.

England bowler James Anderson, speaking to the BBC: "We bowled pretty well. Huge credit to Jadeja and Pant. Sometimes you have to take your hat off to the opposition and obviously they have bowled well. It can be difficult when you have so many rain delays it is which team can cope with that best and they probably nudged us on that today.

"We have been in tight spots this summer and have always had people who would put their hand up and try and get us back into the game. We have got plenty of guys in the dressing room who will do that tomorrow."

I don't think England have had a great game here to be honest. Their tactics yesterday of having up to five slips at one point seemed excessive.

To then bowl consistently short to numbers 9,10 and 11. I don't think that's a good tactic at all. Try to bowl them out.

Importantly, the Indian bowlers bowled with a lot of discipline. The line and the length was excellent. Shami bowled beautifully from one end. Joe Root's dismissal was a great example, he faced 16 dots before that. It's not just about getting the ball to swing and seam. It's about hitting the lines and lengths.

Couple of those plays and misses from Root were very unlike him. That was a very un-Joe Root like innings. Got to give credit to the Indian bowlers. The idea was to make him come onto the front foot because he's so comfortable off the backfoot.

If I was Baz McCullum I would speak to Joe Root and tell him not to change his game. He's been brilliant over the past two years. He's a difficult man to tie down and can score by playing his normal game. England's mindset is to back themselves, not necessarily go out and score six an over. Joe Root already does that and must continue to do so.

It's tricky as a coach to give generic messages to a team because they can be interpreted in different ways. We saw Joe Root advance down the pitch to high quality fast bowling. He got an edge over the slip cordon doing that. He is a high class player and it was frenetic innings which isn't Joe Root.

I haven't seen the ball beat Root's bat quite as much as it did today, going for wide balls that he wouldn't normally go for. I wonder if there is some pressure in the back of his mind that he has to play aggressive cricket.

It's his batting that got everyone talking initially but Jasprit Bumrah was phenomenal with the ball.

His three early wickets pegged England back straight away and they were never able to settle.

Absolutely India's day. They have showed to be top class opponents with their resilience with the bat, and especially today through Ravindra Jadeja. However, I still can't get over the drama of what I witnessed with Stuart Broad and Jasprit Bumrah.

Broad's an experienced bowler but he was rattled by Bumrah. England's bowling tactics were wrong. Bumrah and Mohammed Shami have modest batting records and England have not learned their lesson from 12 months ago. It happened under Joe Root's captaincy and now under Ben Stokes. It was extraordinary and gave them momentum when they came to bowl.

We've not had much play today but it's still somehow managed to be a day that's had everything.

Ravindra Jadeja scored a ton. James Anderson took a five-for. And then everyone forgot about it when Stuart Broad went for 35 runs in an over.

Then it rained.

Then it rained some more.

Then England lost wickets in a cluster.

What will tomorrow bring?

It's been a great contest. The Indian bowling attack is really high class and England haven't managed to assert themselves with the bat like they did against New Zealand. The rain breaks did hurt them.

A sigh of relief as Ben Stokes opts against going on the charge and instead calmly leaves the last ball of the day.

What an hour for India's bowlers. They had an advantage and they made it count.

England still trail by 332. It's going to take something very special (again) from England tomorrow to get back into this.

Six of the last seven overs have been maidens and there have been just two runs off the bat.

Ben Stokes is in ... and charges at Mohammed Shami from his third delivery!

He ends up defending it solidly but wow.

I'm not sure what we're going to see here. Should be the last over coming up.

Jack Leach hasn't done a thing wrong there. That sort of delivery would have got a lot of better players out. Shami went just a little wide of the crease and got it to nip away after angling it in.

Bairstow is leaving well. Batsmen can get confidence in two ways. One is obviously by getting runs but the other is by defending well.

Bairstow leaves well off Siraj in the way that Root couldn't resist.

England still trail by 333 runs. But remember they were 55-6 against New Zealand just a week or so ago. How many times do you reckon we'll keep referencing that one?
