England had India on the ropes at 98-5, but a stand of 222 between Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant dragged the match back in the tourists' favour.
Pant smashed 19 fours and four sixes in his sparkling innings of 146, giving this new, attacking England a taste of their own medicine.
Jadeja remains unbeaten on 83, with India closing on 338-7.
A fascinating first session awaits.
