Four of them! So he's got to choose one now. They'll all be the same though won't they? Same size, same shape and same weight.
Four bats being brought out for Joe Root. Four bats, Jeremy. He's selected one before facing Mohammed Shami's next over.

My view since the McCullum era inception is to intensively manipulate/shuffle/rotate the top seven in order to expose each player to different game scenarios. In the end the line up will reach a natural equilibrium with each batter in their rightful position.

Jasprit Bumrah continues to Joe Root. The former England skipper opens the face and pushes a single. However, Root is unhappy with his bat when he reaches the non-striker's end and has gesticulated to the dressing room he wants a different willow to wield.

3.5 hours, 2 wickets and 7 overs just to get even with *that* over from Broad.

He's really thrown his bat at this. Completely safe. Bit of width and Pope flashed at it and got it over the slips.
Mohammed Shami offers Ollie Pope some width and, in a shot more reminiscent of Robin Smith than Ian Bell, he uses his wrists to cut the ball to the boundary with a flashy cut shot.

What I am looking out for is the extra pace from the India bowlers. England are all 82-83 mph, including Matthew Potts, whereas the likes of Jasprit Bumrah could get up to 87-88 mph a bit more consistently. That could provide a little bit more spice for the afternoon.
Joe Root is able to see off the remaining two balls of Jasprit Bumrah's over without too much alarm. Ollie Pope on strike with Mohammed Shami ready to test his powers of patience outside his off stump.

Not surprised that Bumrah was made captain. He was vice-captain in the previous series and from what I've heard he's very involved in setting fields and taking decisions. He has a very high cricketing IQ.
An emphatic and classy start from Joe Root who drives Jasprit Bumrah's first ball of his unfinished over down the ground for four.
Joe Root has just marked his guard, and Jasprit Bumrah is at the top of his mark.
The umpires have just called play.

As an Indian, it is so lovely to see our fast bowlers swinging the ball at will. The Indian team were always seen as the team who relied heavily on their spinners. It is not the case anymore. We are fortunate to have so much fast bowling talent.

The hovver cover is now off, India's bowlers are on the field going through their loosening exercises on the edge of the boundary.
Ollie Pope and Joe Root are likewise padded up and shadow batting.
Not long now.
A reminder that England lost a wicket just before the heavens opened. Zak Crawley caught in the slips off Jasprit Bumrah.
Okay, we're on course to start at 15:15 BST - no further showers permitting.
Play can continue until 19:00 this evening, with tea scheduled for 17:00.
Some encouraging news. Most brollies in the crowd have been put away and it's stopped raining.
The covers are off at Edgbaston and the boundary rope is being pulled to skim some of the residue off the surface.
However, the hovver cover is still on at the moment. The umpires will be out shortly.
Another update. And...another pitch inspection. We'll have more at 15:00 BST.
