Mohammed Siraj has some success against Jonny Bairstow. He dismissed him three times last summer. The difference is that Jonny Bairstow of 2021 was very different to the current one.

Mohammed Siraj is a skiddy customer. He predominantly tends to bring it back in and looks to get one to hold its line.
A change bowler as Jasprit Bumrah withdraws himself from the attack for Mohammed Siraj, who you may remember from last year relishes the in-your-face aggression of fast bowling.
His third delivery is a little short and Bairstow is able to just whip it round the corner for four. The Yorkshireman, in fine form, used the pace of the ball to help that on its way to the boundary.

Overcast conditions here and as I look to our left, I see a bit of cloud. The bowlers sense it and work just a little bit harder because they know they might be going off again.

India look on it. In the field everywhere, encouraging the bowler. It's quite easy sometimes when you've got two top class bowlers swinging it everywhere, it's easy to get behind them.
It appears a bearded steward in a high visibility jacket is catching the eye of Jonny Bairstow which causes a momentary delay to proceedings as, somewhat perturbed, he gesticulates in the direction to tell him to sit down and stop moving.
Mohammed Shami finishes his over with a brisk 90mph delivery which Baristow fends off high on the bat.

The ground staff are moving towards the covers...

Good energy from India in the field and you'd expect that. I think the last few minutes of their innings and what happened with the Broad over shifted the momentum in their favour.
Jonny Bairstow off the mark as he works it round the corner off Mohammed Shami for a couple. Mohammed Siraj prevents the boundary with a fine diving stop.

That last one was in the air! He looked to work it leg-side but got a leading edge and it ran down behind point for four. Not the sort of shot you'd expect from Joe Root.
Joe Root, collar turned up, gently taps his bat on the edge of the crease.
He is able to ease his lithe frame forward to elegantly push Jasprit Bumrah through cover for a couple. A ball later, he's on the back foot and playing with soft hands to guide it past gully for a couple more.
The penultimate ball of the over is less convincing, however, as a leading edge races through point to the boundary for four.
Scoreboard is ticking.

This is a slightly different situation and slightly different bowling attack for Jonny Bairstow. The pitch is doing a little bit and you can't come out and start smashing it all around the park. You've got to settle in.

Mike Bell: Undercurrent of a humming sound from the crowd. Root and England under the pump, digging in in favourable bowling conditions. Tension as England look to build and India move the ball around. Test cricket. Gripping, and utterly wonderful. I love it.
Jonny Bairstow, a cable knit jumper topping off his three layers, faces up to his first delivery from Mohammed Shami and allows it to go through. With some rain still floating around, and more potential delays, this is a testing period for the two Yorkshiremen at the crease.

Another poor shot. Outside off stump, it wasn't the length. A big wide swing away from the body.
Pope c Iyer b Bumrah 10 (Eng 44-3)
A no-ball at the end of the over is rebowled, and stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah strikes.
He bags his third wicket of the day as Ollie Pope is drawn into playing a wide one outside off stump - sensing a scoring opportunity with an expansive drive - and he edges it to second slip.
It went at a rate of knots and is gobbled at the second attempt by Shreyas Iyer at the second attempt.
Geoff Boycott, bedecked in his Saturday best of sky blue blazer and blue shirt with signature panama hat, is casting his eye over proceedings from upon high. The type of situation he would doubtless have relished as a player.
Ollie Pope, with a very un-Boycott pink grip, gets a nasty one from Jasprit Bumrah which jags in and strikes him on the innner thigh. Might be a little bruise there later.

Shami is so skiddy. When he bowls it, it just kisses the pitch. You'd think he'd be effective anywhere, even on a dry pitch.
Mohammed Shami's second ball strikes Joe Root on the pad, and there's a stifled appeal from the India fielders but little interest in any kind of review.
There's a bit of movement in the hospitality boxes above the sightscreen which has irritated Ollie Pope and there's a slight delay before he leaves the final delivery of Shami's over.
England playing patiently here, just as the sun peeps through to cheers from the crowd.
