The honours board at Edgbaston has the obligatory white tape on it to acknowledge its two most recent international centurions. Ravindra Jadeja reached three figures first thing this morning after Rishabh Pant's brilliant hundred yesterday.
There is still cricket going on elsewhere in the country despite the frustrations at Edgbaston.
The first round of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy starts today with three matches taking place. It is raining at the Edgbaston Foundation Ground where Central Sparks are 110-4 after 26.5 overs against the Southern Vipers. You can listen to commentary of that fixture here.
Elsewhere Western Storm have made 255-9 against Lightning, captain Sophie Luff top-scoring with 48 and Piepa Cleary taking three wickets.
Over in Beckenham, Alice Capsey hit 61 not out as South East Stars racked up 281-8 against Sunrisers. Kira Chathli made the same score and Bryony Smith 66.

The situation here at Edgbaston is that it hasn't rained very hard but it has rained consistently. Club matches would have played through the rain that stopped play earlier. It's steady without being hard and is really annoying at the moment.

It's very fine rain at Edgbaston. It's very bright and it almost looks like the sun is going to come out. Forecasts do suggest that we can get a lot of play in later in the day.
Still more than few spots of rain around at Edgbaston, unfortunately. They're just mopping up the covers but the brollies are still up.
Test Match Special's stats expert Andy Zaltzman runs through the history of the most expensive overs in Test history as Stuart Broad now tops that ignominious list after going for 35 runs at Edgbaston.

I understand the frustration with our openers but we need to find a pair, or a three, to give selection options, and let them stick in there and develop at the top level. We can't keep giving different players 20 innings or so, and call for moving onto someone else if they haven't averaged 120 or something ridiculous by the end of their run of games.

Crawley has been out 11 times between 2020-21 season while playing a front-foot attacking shot. One out of every 15 front foot-attacking-shots he has played has resulted in him getting out and it's the worst amongst all top-order batters across the world.

It would be a huge wrench to drop Zak Crawley having publicly backed him so much. But if he doesn't get past 20-30 in the second innings sometimes you are better off taking the player out of the limelight.
I have been in that situation. You can get weighed down by the scrutiny. And as this is a technical thing you can get weighed down by getting out in the same way.
There's a dearth of candidates to open the batting for England in Test cricket is the crux of the Zak Crawley conundrum, I think. Funky shouts for Jos Buttler and Jason Roy just don't do it for me. Without fielding restrictions it's a different game.

Tim Carlisle: Crawley just isn't suited to opening. If England like him that much he needs to bat lower, against a softer ball moving less. Maybe he could be a top 5 or 6 but top order is not his game.

There's no easy answer. The captain and the coach will see him day in day out and how Crawley is playing in the nets. It's a subjective thing. If you believe in his talent you are more likely to give him a run in the side. In that passage of play we saw the best of him, when he struck Bumrah for four. When he plays that shot it goes for. He puts the bowlers under pressure.
But with a length ball outside off stump, and that's the key, a length ball. He keeps getting out that way then the opposition are going to put balls in that way. Sooner or later he goes after it.
The best players adapt well and make intelligent decisions. Who is helping him understand his game?

I don't know what they should do with Zak Crawley. Well actually I think they should leave him out shouldn't they?

Zak Crawley, since his remarkable 267 against Pakistan he's got 20 single figure scores and is averaging 18.
So, Zak Crawley...
Here comes another shower. Hovver cover coming on. Players walking off.
