Just a few examples there of people not being best pleased with Ben Stokes' dismissal. The England captain is certainly not taking a traditional approach to Test match batting.

His gung-ho approach looks brilliant when it works. When it doesn't? Less so.

Anyway, the players should be back out there now. They're not. It's still drizzling in Birmingham.

Can someone please tell Stokes that his job as England captain is to secure the best result for his team - not provide a 20 minute batting spectacular for the crowd.

Mike Fisher: I'm sorry but that's really really poor from Stokes. Completely unnecessary.

Jambarrell: He may have done wonders for Bairstow but arguably McCullum is having a very negative impact on Stokes's batting, he's becoming a lower order slogger.

Bairstow v Stokes Bairstow = aggresive with control, discipline Stokes = aggressive with reckless shot selection and irresponsible mindset. It may be entertaining cricket for some, but it may have cost England a series defeat.

Jay: Say what you want about this new BazBall but I just feel like in the last two Tests, where Bairstow has been aggressive but measured, Stokes has been reckless.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news - although I feel as though that is all I have been doing the past few days (sorry, folks) - but based on the pictures we're seeing from Edgbaston now, the chances of play restarting at 12:55 BST are slim in the extreme.

Stokes' wicket did nothing to dim Bairstow's bold approach. The Yorkshireman - potentially riled up by a bit of verbal jousting with Virat Kohli - has motored his way to 91* from 113 balls.

With another hundred so close, he'll be hoping the rain abates soon.

As he has done throughout the summer, Stokes was also trying to impose himself on the bowlers and really tread the line between aggressive and reckless.

He was dropped twice, first by Shardul Thakur - a real dolly in the covers - and then by Jasprit Bumrah at mid-off. The stand-in India skipper made up for his error the next ball though with a brilliant catch to see off Stokes.

After a difficult start to the day, Jonny Bairstow soon found his rhythm, swatting the ball to the boundary with carefree abandon and getting through to another half-century.

Let's look at some of the highlights from the morning session then and, early on, it was Ben Stokes trying to get England going as India's pacers really applied the pressure.

There have been better players and better innings, but I'm struggling to think of another period when an England player has dominated bowling in the way Jonny Bairstow has in the past three Tests.

I don't think it was forecast this rain. Most disappointing.

Thanks, Ffion. I think we've all had just about enough of rain delays this week so hopefully they'll be back out there quickly this afternoon!

What has made the interruptions all the more annoying is that the cricket we have seen at Edgbaston has been fantastic. It wasn't meant to rain today so fingers crossed this is just a passing shower.

I'm now going to hand over to someone who's live texted about a week's worth of rain delays recently so I really hope we're not in for a long one here.

Here's Sam Drury to take you through what promises to be a thriller of an afternoon session.

  17. Restart at 12:55 BSTpublished at 12:24 British Summer Time 3 July 2022

If there's no further rain during the interval, we'll have a restart at 12:55 BST.

    Fingers crossed!

An early lunch has been taken and fingers crossed it's just a passing shower because it is set up for a thrilling afternoon.

The full covers are on, and it looks like it may have already died down a bit so hopefully we won't have too much of a delay.

It's been a remarkable opening session.

The rain has once again came at a very unfortunate time for England, with Jonny Bairstow nearing his century and, even though they're still 200 odd runs behind, England dominating proceedings and once again providing us with some breath-taking entertainment.

We've got some rain suddenly. Well it's been an exhausting morning, can't keep track of anything. That took us all by surprise. The covers are coming on quickly.
