It's a shot a ball territory again. I'm not sure what to make of it.

He had a struggle for 20 minutes this morning, he had to work hard yesterday but we're seeing the best of Bairstow again.

  3. 50 runs

50 for Jonny Bairstowpublished at 37 overs

    Eng 148-5

Another day, another Jonny Bairstow half-century.

What a summer he is having. It's come from 81 balls and it's his fourth consecutive fifty.

It's been different - he's had to graft at times, but combined with his brutal aggression too.

  4. Eng 146-5published at 36.4 overs

Bairstow dabs a quick single before Stokes pulls firmly into the leg side for three.

This is brilliant. And yet I'm so nervous it could all come crashing down at any second.

    So many emotions.

Jacob: I love this new era, but there's a difference between playing aggressive and hitting good aggressive shots (Bairstow now) and running down the ground trying to slog everything (Stokes now). Controlled aggression please!

It's been another feature of the summer, dropped catches costing lots of runs. Daryl Mitchell profited, Jonny Bairstow did at Headingley.

  7. Eng 141-5published at 36 overs

Pulled away ... for a single. Disappointing.

    Get a move on, Jonny.

Mohammed Shami has to change his shoes. The Bazball effect.

In T20 terms, it's length bowling. And in T20, length disappears and that's what's happening. But it's happening in a Test match.

  9. Eng 139-5published at 35.3 overs

Jonnyyyyyyy! Chipped over the top for four more!!

It's almost a shot a ball again. Can they keep playing this way and get away with it? Ben Stokes almost didn't.

  11. Eng 135-5published at 35.2 overs

Just to make matters worse for India, Bairstow clips the next ball off his legs for four!

That is a shocker. There was so much time for the noise of the crowd to get in his ears. He knew how important that was.

They are standing up all around Edgbaston and cheering, the England supporters anyway.

  14. dropped catch

Stokes dropped on 18published at 35.1 overs

    WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!

Stokes attempts to whack Shami into the stands again but completely miscues it, the ball flying high into the air.

Shardul Thakur gets into a good position underneath it but somehow the ball just pops out. Stokes was ready to walk off!

Dukkhaboy: That I still have a little bit of hope despite a 300-run deficit just shows how well the Key/McCullum/Stokes era has started.

Terrific shot from Jonny Bairstow, he's really showing he's at ease with things now after battling through the opening period.

  17. Eng 130-5published at 35 overs

Mohammed Siraj is on ... and greeted by two more Bairstow fours!

The first is classically clipped through mid-wicket and the second just thumped over cover.

Don't go anywhere. This is fun.

  18. How's stat?!published at 11:07 British Summer Time 3 July 2022

Shami has bowled a 17-over opening spell over four different sessions.

He's skewed it slightly but what's in Bairstow's favour is that he's gone in the V and through the line of the ball.

  20. Eng 121-5published at 34 overs

    Now we're talking.

Bairstow thumps another boundary down the ground and then chips one into the leg side and they run a rapid two. They're in one-day mode now.

How will India respond to this? They threw some punches this morning and now England are throwing them back.
