I'm enjoying this. There is a bit going on and I think it's the psychological side of the game that I'm enjoying with these teams going at each other.

Short, wide and absolutely nailed through the covers for four by Stokes.

What a shot that is, almost an exact replica of his winning boundary at Headingley in 2019. It's turning in to a great battle now.

That four was the 100th ball that Bairstow has faced from Bumrah in Tests and just the second boundary he's scored.

Back over his head. This is more like the Jonny Bairstow we've seen in recent times.

No risk in that shot, really, because he had the movement covered.

Oh, lovely! A lofted drive from Bairstow over mid-off for four.

Amid a few scampered ones and twos that's a profitable over for England, 10 from it.

More of this would be nice.

Yesterday Virat and Jonny Bairstow walked off arm in arm. It's a fickle thing, love, isn't it?

  8. Eng 100-5published at 32 overs

It's getting a little heated out there.

Has Virat Kohli forgotten he's not India captain any more? He's doing all the talking, and seems to be winding up Jonny Bairstow.

Bairstow responds with another wild swing but this time it flies away off the outside edge and they run three.

    This is just super-duper bowling!

    Hmmm.

Bairstow is swinging at everything here, but the problem is he just keeps missing. Shami is too good.

Bumrah is having a game here. He's bowling at the speed of light and moving the ball around. This is not what England want to see.

  12. Eng 97-5published at 31 overs

Bumrah has got Bairstow in all sorts of bother but the batter takes a single from the final ball to keep the strike.

I'm sure Stokes will be relieved to have a bit more time to recover.

That's a nasty blow. Where has that hit him? He's getting over this in a rather unusual way.

He's getting over it with his own particular method there. That technique seemed to work quite well...

  14. ouch!

    Eng 95-5published at 30.1 overs

Ben Stokes edges the ball into a ... delicate area? I think you can work it out.

A strange sight follows where he drops to his knees, grimaces and rubs it ... better?

I can't relate to the pain he must be in but it looked like that one stung.

Mike: England could do with losing zero wickets today.

  16. Eng 95-5published at 30 overs

Jonny Bairstow you are a lucky, lucky man.

He plays a loose drive at Shami and the ball just nips over the top of the stumps.

Or does it, Aggers? I never found that because you know he's not going to do it every ball.

That did come out of the middle of the bat, it was absolutely in the slot and he's launched it over Shami's head. That's an extraordinary shot.

It does mess with the bowler's length.

  19. Eng 94-5published at 29.3

Stokes takes two steps down the pitch at Mohammed Shami and launches him straight back over his head for a one-bounce four.

    Okay then.

  20. Eng 90-5published at 29 overs

    Ah, much better.

Bumrah overpitches slightly and Stokes whips it through the leg-side for the first runs of the day.
