Bumrah c Crawley b Stokes 7 (Ind 245 all out)

Another short ball and that will do it for England! Bumrah pulled the previous ball high over fine leg for six, he went again next ball and this time the top-edge goes straight to Zak Crawley, a couple of yards off the rope.

England have a tough chase ahead but they have kept themselves in with a chance.

I would have just gone straight for the new ball if I was England.

While this is the new England, if you look at India in the last five years or so they have played fearless cricket. It just hasn't been given a name. I can't see Rahul Dravid changing that.

A pair of singles from the Leach over. No real scares for Siraj or Bumrah but no shots in anger either. All very controlled for now.

No new ball as yet for England, Jack Leach will continue.

This is the kind of challenge that this new England side want and they've got themselves into a position from good bowling and some very poor batting from India this morning. There were some loose shots.

  7. Ind 237-9published at 80 overs

Stokes bangs it in again and again to Mohammed Siraj. The India number 11 has a big swing and a miss before pushing the last ball to extra cover and calling for the single. He's backing himself!

That is an excellent line from Ben Stokes. It just kept tailing in and maybe it beat him for pace a little bit too.

Stokes bowling has improved as this game has gone on.

The ball just came back a little bit and he dragged it on! The end of the India innings is imminent because Siraj isn't anything great with the bat.

    Jadeja b Stokes 23 (Ind 236-9)

Dragged on! Jadeja tries to chop the ball down to third man but with Stokes' angle, the ball kept coming back into him and became too close to cut.

One more for England to get before the chase can start.

The game is just in a bit of a holding pattern. England's short-pitch bowling has worked really well but the next phase is about to start with the new ball just round the corner.

  12. Ind 236-8published at 79 overs

Everyone seems to be waiting for that second new ball now. In the meantime, Leach rattles through his over and Jadeja manages to pinch a single into the offside.

One over until the second new ball.

Re Jason Cole 13:04. Cook would of course still be picked. As a 20-year-old he averaged 50 in the County Championship and had scored a double century against Australia in a tour match for Essex. Even as a 'slower' scorer he'd be light years ahead of England's other opening options and a shoo-in for selection.

    Bumrah 0, Jadeja 22

The Edgbaston crowd are in good voice, they must have started early in the Hollies Stand. It's normally not until after tea that they really find their voice.

Two overs until the second new ball is available after Jadeja clips a single from Stokes' latest.

Sheldon Cooper: Replying to Jason Cole, no, Sir Alastair Cook wouldn't be picked for any team. A Test is what it is, it is supposed to test technique and patience! They are going to kill Test cricket with this BazBall nonsense.

  16. Ind 234-8published at 77 overs

You can see why England didn't go upstairs, on the angle from around the wicket, it needed to turn a fair amount. As it happens, it did. How costly will that be?

Oh, it did do enough. Leach's instinct was right - he was very confident in the appeal. England have missed one.

  18. Ind 234-8published at 76.3 overs

Big appeal from England as Leach hits Bumrah on the toe. The bowler is keen but England opt not to review. Was it sliding down leg?

No, ball-tracking shows that would have been out if they had sent it upstairs. A let off for Bumrah.

I wasn't sure about the short-ball tactic from England but it has roughed up the Indians and brought wickets.

  20. Ind 233-8published at 76 overs

The bouncer barrage continues - and why wouldn't it given the wickets it's brought today? Well, yes, it did get messy in the first innings but it's worked this time!

Anyway, Stokes overdoes to start the over and is called for a wide for height. Jadeja is playing calmly but still wants to farm the strike, turning down singles until the fourth ball again.

Bumrah safely negotiates the last couple of deliveries.
