    Middlesex 401 v Derbyshire 77-1

    Sam Dalling

Relative serenity here after yesterday’s gusts and a six-wicket morning session.

Derbyshire nip off for a brew having lost just one man. Billy Godleman it was who had the honour of being Tim Murtagh’s 900th first-class victim - a nip-backer did for him.

What a bowler Murtagh is. Forty years-young and still going.

Derbyshire supporters will be ticking off the days until he retires; 70 red-ball wickets against them now – more than versus any other side.

Little else for Middlesex to cheer though. Shan Masood looks like could bat until close on Sunday on 45 not out.

    Draw the favourite.

James Vince registers a half-century to get his first-class campaing up and running.

Just 64 balls and seven fours so far to get there.

He then cuts another four behind square off Tom Abell to bring up a fourth batting bonus point for his side.

  3. Tea at Wantage Roadpublished at 16:07 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Northants 156-7 v Gloucestershire 223

Northants have now moved to within 67 runs of Gloucestershire, thanks to the efforts of Rob Keogh.

  4. Back under way at Ageas Bowlpublished at 16:07 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Hampshire 341-4 v Somerset 180

Sun tries to peak through the clouds as the evening session begins at the Ageas Bowl.

James Vince (46 not out) looking to push Hampshire's lead on and also towards a half-century for himself.

The toil is finally over for Kent as Matt Critchley is bowled for 132 (five short of equalling his first-class best).

The first time since 2017 Essex have had three centurions in an innings. Then it was the top three of Browne, A Cook and Varun Chopra against Middlesex.

Kent will likely be without the injured Joe Denly in their reply and will have huge scoreboard pressure to deal with as well as an Essex attack which has a little more variety to call on.

WICKETpublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Roach c Hain b Briggs 4 (Surrey 350-8 v Warwickshire)

A third wicket for Danny Briggs on the stroke of tea as Kemar Roach pops one up to short leg, where Sam Hain takes a sharp catch, diving low to his right to snaffle a brilliant one-hander.

Ben Foakes goes to tea on 87.

Somerset finally got amongst the Hampshire wickets this afternoon, collecting their first bonus point of the season in the process.

But they still find themselves right up against it, 159 runs in arrears and with James Vince in imperious form.

In the course of it, we had the rare sight of an opposition player acting as a substitute fielder, as Hampshire youngster Fletcha Middleton came on briefly to replace Tom Lammonby - testimony to the extent of the depredations made by illness, injury and ECB-enforced non-availability on Somerset's playing strength.

Simply sublime from Matt Critchley on his Essex debut.

He’s struck the ball so sweetly since his first scoring shot was an on-drive for four.

Offering no chances his timing has been on point and his addition makes Essex’s lower-middle order look an imposing one with Adam Rossington and Adam Wheater. They also have Paul Walter waiting in the wings for his chance.
