    Middlesex 401 v Derbyshire 49-0

    Sam Dalling
    BBC Radio London at Lord's

Slow and steady. Perfect for Derbyshire really.

A good start they wanted and a good start they’ve got.

Ethan Bamber and Tim Murtagh took the new ball, no surprise given they claimed 110 wickets between them in 2021. Economical as they were though, relatively little to stir what is a decent crowd here.

Shan Masood (31 not out) looks classy, particularly driving and clipping on the leg side. Nothing flusters him either. Not even Jack Davies who spent the first few overs waspishly clapping in the batter’s ear post every delivery.

Billy Godleman (18 not out) has passed 1,000 first-class runs on this ground. He started his career at Middlesex remember, debuting way back in 2005 against the students of Cambridge alongside his great pal Steven Finn.

With just 13 days to their first home game (Worcestershire's flood woes have long since meant starting the season on the road), long-serving groundsman Tim Packwood has reportedly resigned, external.

He has been part of the New Road groundstaff there since 1989 - and took over as head groundsman from Roy McLaren in 2001. And he obviously knows more about how to deal with a flooded cricket ground than any man in England. He will surely be a hard act to follow.

Packwood is apparently due to take charge of his last game when the Pears host Sussex on 21 April.
