    Interesting morning ahead at Chelmsford.

The strong winds from yesterday have abated and we have very still conditions with some cloud cover, but the sun trying to peep through.

Kent will hope that leads to friendlier bowling conditions to get themselves back into the match while Essex are looking for the surface to play as it did yesterday.

  4. James Bracey moves into the 80spublished at 11:11 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Gloucestershire 168-8 v Northants

Off and running at Wantage Road too as Gloucestershire's England man James Bracey gets his first single of the day, followed by a neat two to move on to 81.

    Real captain's innings so far.

  5. Ollie Pope off and running againpublished at 11:07 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Surrey 169-3 v Warwickshire

One Ollie Pope single so far as Olly Hannon-Dalby completes his unfinished over from last night, followed by a tidy maiden over from Craig Miles.

  6. Weatherley picks up where he left offpublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

Joe Weatherley starts the second day's play at the Ageas Bowl with another fine square drive for four off Kasey Aldridge to take him to 69.

He and Ian Holland (43 not out) continuing to build an impressive opening partnership for the hosts.

  7. 'Big first hour' for Derbyshire aheadpublished at 11:01 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

    Middlesex 307-4 v Derbyshire

    Sam Dalling
    BBC Radio London at Lord's

Don’t say it. Don’t say it. Ok, I’m saying it: Crucial first hour for Derbyshire. First available opportunity and out it comes. “Massive” in the words of Mickey Arthur, and he should know.

Very much Middlesex’s day yesterday. Stevie Eskinazi was imperious en-route to 118, a 186-run stand second-wicket stand with Josh de Caires (80) steering the hosts to 307-4 overnight. Only once did they pass 300 here at Lord’s in 2021, also in their opening innings. What happened? They lost to Somerset.

Derbyshire started poorly but kept at it. They weren’t aided by Ryan Sidebottom pulling up lame seven balls into his debut though. Arthur confirmed last night that Sidebottom’s match is over, but is hopeful he will feature again during a one-month loan spell. Good news.

First, much work for Suranga Lakmal, Sam Conners and Anuj Dal this morning. The second new ball is just 16 overs old and there is plenty of cloud cover.

Pleased to report a significant drop in wind sped this morning. Lord’s could have doubled up as a hurricane simulator for most of Thursday.

    Surrey 168-3 v Warwickshire

It's a glorious morning in Birmingham for day two of the reigning county champions' opening game of the season against Surrey.

Well for this time of year anyway. Can any morning really be glorious on the 8th of April? Even at a county cricket ground.

But will it stay like this?

Local weather guru Avais, the hearteningly cheery Edgbaston car park steward, reckons there's going to be rain at three o'clock.

He was spot on with his '40 per cent chance of rain' forecast yesterday. And, in the end, we had the lot. Sun, wind, rain, hail, every colour and shape of cloud imaginable, and even a nice rainbow.

  11. Hampshire bid to press home advantagepublished at 10:54 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

Despite losing the toss, they bowled Somerset out for just 180 before closing on 109-0 in reply.

Weather outlookpublished at 10:50 British Summer Time 8 April 2022

Well, we didn't manage to get through the opening day of the season without some unusual weather events with heavy hail storms among the features at Cardiff plus some very blustery winds.

Today is looking for the most part, a much brighter prospect if still a little chilly, but there are some lingering showers for the early hours of play along the south coast that should eventually clear.

Here's the full outlook from the BBC Weather Centre.
