It's been quite a day - one which began with the news of Joe Root's resignation as England Test captain no doubt the hot topic of conversation around the grounds..

Matters then switched onto the field and after career-best figures by Craig Overton, Somerset's batting frailties returned to leave them facing probable defeat by Essex at Taunton.

Lancashire and Derbyshire were the biggest scorers, both passing 500 in their first innings, with Pakistan's Shan Masood making 239 for the latter.

What will day three have in store? Join us from about 10:30 tomorrow to find out.

Nightwatchman Sam Cook keeps out the final ball and Essex will need another 81 runs on day three to wrap this one up.

Day two was largely about two bowlers, with Craig Overton taking a career-best 7-57 as Somerset restricted Essex to a first-innings lead of 721.

  11. Gloucestershire rue missed chancespublished at 18:20 British Summer Time 15 April 2022

    Gloucestershire 227 v Yorkshire 332-7

    Edward Seabourne
    BBC Radio Bristol commentator

It has turned into a long day in the field for Gloucestershire, as the sun has beaten down for almost the entire day.

Things have tended to happen in spurts for them, and whilst heads have never seemed to drop, some missed chances will be rued, and Yorkshire and Harry Brook in particular have made them pay for them.

Ajeet Dale in particular has been a bright spot today, bowling with pace, aggression and perhaps the biggest key being accuracy.

Gloucestershire have erased large first innings deficits at Bristol in recent times, but this task feels far tougher at this stage.
