Australian fast bowler Mark Steketee believes Essex's strength in depth will stand them in good stead as they look to challenge for the title this season.

The 28-year-old took 3-47 as they bowled out Somerset on day one at Taunton in the second game of his six-match deal with the club.

"They've got a very strong squad, it's not just the 11 guys that are out on the field. Jamie Porter's missed out (on this game) and he's a class player and there are some class players that can come in if injuries happen," he told BBC Essex.

"It takes a squad effort to win any tournament and I'm sure they'll be tested."

Who should replace Root?published at 10:39 British Summer Time 15 April 2022

Fitch: Root going causes more issues than it solves. Who next? Don't think Stokes wants it and he already has enough on his plate. Is there anyone else in the team who has even cemented a place in the side? I don’t think there’s anyone not droppable.

Robin Johnson: Before everyone lays into Root, let's take a moment to appreciate his unbelievably good batting recently. New captain has to be from ‘the outside’ though. Things need shaking up. Therefore - only one candidate, Tom Abell.
