It is not often that Jimmy Anderson is out-bowled, but he was on day one of his first game of the season for Lancashire against Gloucestershire as team-mate Hassan Ali claimed 6-47.

Elsewhere in Division One, Daniel Bell-Drummond and Tom Abell made impressive centuries for Kent and Somerset respectively, while Essex were bowled out for just 168 by reigning champions Warwickshire.

In Division Two, Brett D'Oliviera hit an unbeaten hundred for Worcestershire, while 16 wickets fell in Cardiff with Glamorgan dismissed for 122 by Middlesex.

    Glamorgan 122 v Middlesex 171-6

A tough day for batters on day one at Sophia Gardens, with Glamorgan bowled out for just 122 following last week's away win over Notts.

Shaheen Afridi, on debut, and Toby Roland-Jones picked up three wickets each for the visitors as the home side lasted only 41.1 overs.

Mark Stoneman's 53 off 79 balls for Middlesex was the highest score of the day and although James Harris took 3-48 against his former club, Roland-Jones (39*) and John Simpson (33*) shared an unbroken stand of 61 in the final session.

  4. Close of play at Old Traffordpublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Lancs 11-1 v Glos 252

George Balderson is run out by Zafar Gohar for 5 in the final over of the day.

A superb piece of work - throwing down the striker's stumps from square leg.

Takes a fraction of the gloss off a great day for Lancashire.

They lost the toss and were on the back foot as Gloucestershire went to 119-0 with fifties for Chris Dent and Marcus Harris.

But then the visitors imploded to 150-6 with some poor fortune and poor strokes.

Ryan Higgins' unbeaten 51 ensured it wasn't a complete disaster for the visitors but you feel they've left plenty out there.

Hasan Ali the star for Lancashire with 6-47.

James Anderson with 12 wicketless overs in his first appearance since the New Years' Test in Sydney.

  5. Close of play at New Roadpublished at 18:45 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Worcestershire 338-5 v Sussex

Worcestershire captain Brett D'Oliveira made an unbeaten 106 as his side held sway on the opening day against Sussex.

Ed Pollock gave them a racing start, hitting 77 off 74 balls, but they lost three wickets for 10 runs which left them on 95-3.

Azhar Ali (20) was one of three victims for Tom Haines and it was Ed Barnard who provided the main support for D'Oliveira, contributing 75 to a fifth-wicket stand of 166.

  6. Close of play at Leicesterpublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Leicestershire 213 v Derbyshire 36-1

Fine bowling by paceman Sam Conners gave Derbyshire the edge on day one at the Incora County Ground.

Leicestershire opener Sam Evans made 63 to hold them together after they had been reduced to 68-4, but his dismissal was the first of five wickets to go down for 27 runs and they were all out in the 78th over.

Wiaan Mulder marked his debut with 39, but it was fellow South African Beuran Hendricks who picked up the only Derbyshire wicket to fall, having Billy Godleman caught behind for eight.

  7. Close of play at Wantage Roadpublished at 18:39 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Northants 26-2 v Yorks 296

A very entertaining day at Northampton.

Yorkshire won the toss, slumped to 22-3 before Dawid Malan and Harry Brook shared 131.

Malan made 64 and Brook 84 but the latter fell in a slump of 3-3 in 11 balls.

At 206-7 Yorkshire could have been rolled over but Jordan Thompson made an important 51 from No. 8 that almost helped them to a third batting point.

It was looking like Northants would edge the day but Thompson plucked out two wickets in two balls.

  8. Close of play at the Riversidepublished at 18:32 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Durham 230 v Nottinghamshire 50-0

An unbroken 50 stand between Haseeb Hameed and Ben Slater has put Notts in a strong position after day one at the Riverside.

Durham began well enough - with Sean Dickson making 54 off 95 balls - but the visitors worked their way through their batting line-up as spinner Liam Patterson-White took 5-54.

Liam Trevaskis will play no further part in the game after two bangs on the helmet while batting, and George Drissell has been drafted into the Durham side as a concussion replacement.

  11. Close of play at Edgbastonpublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Warwickshire 76-2 v Essex 168

Champions Warwickshire dominated Essex on the opening day after the visitors collapsed from 98-2 to 168 all out.

Captain Tom Westley was last to go for 80 as spinner Danny Briggs took 4-31, backed up by Oliver Hannon-Dalby's 3-43.

Warwickshire lost Alex Davies and Rob Yates at the start of their reply, but Dom Sibley was there on 33 not out at the close, and he will be hoping to push on to a big score on day two to tighten their grip on the game.

  12. Close of play at the Ovalpublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Surrey v Somerset 283-6

Somerset enjoy their best day of the season so far, thanks to skipper Tom Abell's unbeaten 121 at the Oval.

He chose to bat first despite their batting frailties over the last two weeks, and led from the front, hitting 19 fours in his 335-ball innings.

James Hildreth and Matt Renshaw provided the main support, with 54 and 48 respectively.

Two batting points is two more than they managed in their first two matches.

    Northants 25-2 v Yorks 296

Just when it was becoming Northants' day they lose Ricardo Vasconcelos...

and then nightwatchman Simon Kerrigan first ball!

Jordan Thompson made a really important 51 earlier and now comes up with the breakthroughs.

He angles one from round the wicket past Vasconcelos' inside edge to win and lbw.

And then gets a bit of bounce outside off to take Kerrigan's edge to first slip.

  14. wicket

Gloucestershire all outpublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Dale c Bohannon b Hasan Ali 4 (Lancs v Glos 252)

Ajeet Dale skews a drive to point and Gloucestershire are finished off for 252.

Hasan Ali 6-47, outstanding figures on a wicket offering not much.

Gloucestershire threatened so much more after their wonderful start, 119-0 having won the toss.

It could have been much worse at 150-6 so they will gladly take two batting points but you have to feel that total is light.

Six overs Lancashire will have to face tonight.

  15. 100 runs

for Brett D'Oliveirapublished at 18:15 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Worcestershire 320-5 v Sussex

Worcestershire skipper Brett D'Oliveira went into his shell a bit in the 90s, but the wait is worth it as he reaches his 10th first-class hundred from 216 balls with a single off Henry Crocombe.

D'Oliveira has hit 11 fours and is side already have three batting points in the bag with six overs to come before the close.

    Lancs v Glos 252-9

Ryan Higgins goes to his half-century in 98 balls and in the process raises a second batting point for his side.

First innings runs have been a struggle for the Glosters in their two matches so far, only marginally better here.

Eight overs left in the day.

    Warner c Lamb b Hasan Ali 0 (Lancs v Glos 244-9)

Hasan Ali has proved a shrewd signing already and here completes a five-for as Jared Warner edges low to third slip.

An 11-ball duck for Warner and Gloucestershire are in danger of only picking up one batting point for the third game running.

  18. Close of play at Canterburypublished at 18:06 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Kent 271-7 v Hampshire

Daniel Bell-Drummond was the undoubted star of the first day at the Spitfire Ground, making 149 off 231 balls.

After losing Zak Crawley cheaply, he added 98 with Ben Crompton, whose run of three centuries was ended on 27 when he was bowled by Keith Barker.

Barker led the Hampshire attack superbly with 4-36, but it was Kyle Abbott who had Bell-Drummond lbw after an innings including a six and 25 fours.

He put on 126 with Jordan Cox, who departed to a slip catch off Mohammad Abbas for 51 six overs before stumps.

  19. Postpublished at 18:02 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Surrey v Somerset 261-6

A bit of luck for Tom Abell.

After clipping Jordan Clark away for four through mid-wicket, he tries to pull a short ball later in the over and it flies away over the keeper's head off the top edge for another boundary.

He is now 112 not out and there are five more overs to bowl at the Oval.

  20. Postpublished at 18:01 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Northants 10-0 v Yorks 296

If Northants can see out the remaining nine overs they will have had a pretty good day.

From 206-7 they might be a little annoying they couldn't finish Yorkshire off for closer to 250 but to bowl them out inside the day having lost the toss is a good effort.

New Zealander Will Young, on debut, trying to get them to the close.
