Josh Shaw biffed Matt Parkinson for six and drove George Balderson beautifully straight for four.
But he's now dragged Hasan Ali into his stumps, giving the Pakistani a fourth wicket of the day.
Warwickshire 59-2 v Essex 168
Dom Sibley will be glad of the time in the middle at Edgbaston and a boundary off Mark Steketee takes the England opener to 21 not out. Sam Hain has two and there are eight more overs to come after this one.
Brett D'Oliveira is four runs away from a century for Worcestershire, who are 300-5 against Sussex - Ed Barnard made 75.
Nottinghamshire are 13-0 after five overs after bowling out Durham for 230 at the Riverside.
It's a similar story at Leicester, where the home side were dismissed for 213 - with Sam Conners taking 4-62 - and Derbyshire are 3-0 after three.
Middlesex are nearing a first innings lead in Cardiff - they are 110-5 replaying to Glamorgan's 122 all out.

Good line and length from Mohammad Abbas (how often has that been said?), Jordan Cox pushes forward and James Vince scoops up the catch at first slip. Five overs to go and Kent need Darren Stevens and Matt Milnes to survive until stumps.

It's been a torrid day for the batters in Cardiff but in their defence they've been up again bowling of the highest order.
In Shaeen Afridi, Toby Roland-Jones and Tom Helm, Middlesex have an attack that at very least rivals their 2016 title-winning attack of Tim Murtagh, Roland-Jones and Steven Finn.
Helm, who has been so unlucky with injury, is regarded as very close to the Test side. Afridi needs no introduction from me, while Roland-Jones was the pick of the trio today.
Timm Van der Gugten has been relentless in leading the Glamorgan attack on the top of off stump but former Middlesex all rounder James Harris doing the majority of the damage so far.
The pitch has been a fraction uneven, so worth watching on day two to see whether it flattens or worsens, but the grass covering has meant the devastating accuracy of two high quality attacks has been too much for the batters.
Surrey v Somerset 245-6
Well batted, Tom Abell, who reaches his ninth first-class century from 214 balls, with a single off Reece Topley.
He has 15 boundaries in his innings so far and Somerset are closing in on a second batting point.

The Shire revival is halted with the wicket of Zafar Gohar.
Matt Parkinson has lured him out of his ground for his first wicket of the day.
Can the Glos tail rally with Ryan Higgins, still there on 37, to move them towards 250?

Durham 230 v Nottinghamshire

Liam Patterson-White, who was born a few miles away from this ground in Sunderland, bowled throughout the afternoon from the Finchale End and took 5-54 - his second best figures in first-class cricket.
Ben Raine was the last Durham man to go for 36 and it really wasn't a good afternoon for the hosts after they had reached 96-2 at lunch.
They never really recovered from the loss of three quick wickets at the start of the afternoon session. Added to the dismissal of Sean Dickson just before lunch, it was four for 29 in 14 overs. They have also lost Liam Trevaskis to a concussion injury which is another blow.
Notts now have 15 tricky overs to see out tonight in the evening sunshine in CLS.
Northants v Yorks 296
Some merry slugging from Matt Revis, who ends unbeaten on 31, almost hauled Yorkshire to 300 but they’re denied a third batting point.
Gareth Berg has finished things off and picks up 5-58.
Northants perhaps the happier of the sides having lost the toss.
Batting tends to only get easier at Wantage Road.

So we won't see Overton bowling to Overton - in this innings, at least.
Craig Overton departs, caught at backward point off Reece Topley and Somerset have now lost three wickets for 14 runs.
They need someone to stay with Tom Abell, who is 95 not out. Will Josh Davey be that man?

Kent earn their second batting point, but Keith Barker collects his third wicket at the start of the next over as a limp shot by Ollie Robinson sees him caught behind.
Jordan Cox is 51 not out as he is joined by the venerable Darren Stevens.
Lancs v Glos 202-6
Things got ugly for Gloucestershire shortly before tea when they slumped to 150-6 having been 119-0.
But Zafar Gohar and Ryan Higgins, both with runs already this season, have steadied the situation and got their side a batting point.
As a minimum, Glos need to bat through the day having won the toss and been going so well.
