    Warwickshire v Essex 77-2

A tidy maiden from Liam Norwell to Tom Westley, but it's 12 overs since the last Warwickshire wicket at Edgbaston.

Westley and Dan Lawrence are both 26 not out as left-arm spinner Danny Briggs comes on for his first over of the match.

    Lancs v Glos 91-0

Will be a dream morning for Gloucestershire if Marcus Harris and Chris Dent can see out the session.

Harris has stepped out to Matt Parkinson and walloped him over long-off for six in his first over.

    How very Australian.

  3. Hants 'need to be patient'published at 12:46 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Kent 71-1 v Hampshire

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent

This looks to be a very good batting surface under the sun here at Canterbury.

Last week on this ground, Lancashire scored 500 batting first, and Kent look as through they have the mindset to do the same

There's a little encouragement from time to time for the bowlers, but this already looks as though they will need to be patient.

Thank goodness Hampshire have picked leg-spinner Mason Crane for the first time this season.

A number of places will be up for grabs when the England team to play New Zealand in June is announced. Here are a few thoughts from Ben Duckett, who is among the batsmen hoping to receive a phone call from Rob Key or whoever the captain and head coach are by then.

Notts' Duckett takes game to 'another level'

Nottinghamshire batter Ben Duckett says he cautiously dreams of playing Test cricket for England again after taking his game to "another level".

  6. Division Two round-uppublished at 12:32 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

Nottinghamshire have made a breakthrough at the Riverside with Durham opener Michael Jones caught behind off Dane Paterson for 22, but Seanm Dickson is unbeaten on 36 in the home side's 72-1.

The Ed Pollock show is over at New Road, he was caught off Tom Haines for 77 and the Sussex skipper has both wickets to fall in Worcestershire's 92-2 in the 20th over.

Leicestershire lost George Rhodes and Colin Ackermann in the space of five overs and are 50-3 in the 22nd over against Derbyshire.

The Glamorgan collapse continues at Sophia Gardens and they are now 52-7 against Middlesex, with Martin Andersson recently having Michael Neser lbw.

    Surrey v Somerset 35-1

It is slow going for Somerset at the Oval but time at the crease is what their batsmen need following two three-day defeats.

Matt Renshaw is 17 not out, having just driven Sam Curran down the ground for four, and Tom Abell has 10.

  8. Postpublished at 12:23 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Kent 62-1 v Hampshire

We just did a quick check and Kent opener Ben Compton has already spent more than 1,300 minutes at the crease this season - that's in excess of 21 hours.

With only 80 minutes play so far at Canterbury this morning, he's barely getting started.

Compton is 25 not out and and Daniel Bell-Drummond has 27.

  9. Postpublished at 12:20 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Warwickshire v Essex 53-2

Back to back fours off Henry Brookes, on either side of the wicket, get Dan Lawrence under way at Edgbaston.

A much better strokes follows - a cover drive off Will Rhodes - in the next over as the England batsman joins Tom Westley on 14 not out.

    Northants v Yorks 49-3

Dawid Malan made a big match-saving century, for Middlesex, on his last appearance at Wantage Road and he has it all to do for his side again here after three early wickets for Gareth Berg.

He and Harry Brook trying to settle things.

Matt Kelly, the 27-year-old Western Australian on debut for Northants, is into the attack.

Should be right at home. They say Northampton is very similar to Perth.

    Kent 50-1 v Hampshire

    Daniel Bell-DrummondImage source, Rex Features

Kent appeared to have recovered from the loss of Zak Crawley, with Daniel Bell-Drummond settling in nicely alongside Ben Compton.

He has already collected five boundaries in his 25 not out, with the indefatigable Compton unbeaten on 15.

    Lancs v Glos 44-0

Saqib Mahmood into the attack for Lancashire - his first appearance since the St George's Test.

He has Marcus Harris inside edging past his stumps for four.

At the other end Chris Dent strokes James Anderson beautifully through mid-off for his first boundary.

    An excellent start for Gloucestershire.

    A Cook lbw Rhodes 23 (Warwickshire v Essex 37-2)

    Will RhodesImage source, Rex Features

A big wicket for Warwickshire as Will Rhodes cuts one back off the pitch to Alastair Cook as he pushes forward in defence and the former England skipper is gone.

Rhodes clearly fancies his chances, he dismissed the left-hander twice in 2019 and again last summer.

Tom Westley is 12 not out as he is joined by Dan Lawrence, who needs some runs after scores of seven, 17 and nought so far this season.

  15. Division Two round-uppublished at 12:02 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

Middlesex have made a great start against Glamorgan in Cardiff (see 11:56 entry) and the Welsh county are now 30-5, with David Lloyd having just been run out for 20.

Derbyshire paceman Sam Conners has taken the first wicket at Grace Road, trapping Hassan Azad lbw for 17, and Leicestershire are 30-1 in the 15th over.

Dane Paterson is into the attack now for Nottinghamshire, but Durham are 44-0 with Michael Jones 17 not out and Sean Dickson on 15.

The Worcestershire openers are also still intact and they have advanced to 62-0 against Sussex, with Ed Pollock 50 not out.

  16. Overton takes up the attackpublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Surrey v Somerset 15-1

Jamie Overton comes into the Surrey attack for the first time in a Championship match against his former county.

He was in tremendous form, with eight wickets in last week's win over Hampshire, and his opening over is a tidy one, costing only a single.

Matt Renshaw is six not out and Tom Abell has a single.

  17. 'The Shaheen Afridi show'published at 11:56 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Glamorgan 30-4 v Middlesex

    Ffion Wynne
    BBC Radio Wales

It's been the Shaheen Shah Afridi show at Sophia Gardens in the opening 45 minutes between Middlesex and Glamorgan.

The battle between Shaheen and world number one batter Marnus Labuschagne was set up perfectly when makeshift opener Andrew Salter departed in the second over - but it was short-lived as Labuschagne was bowled for just eight attempting to leave.

Sam Northeast then departed for a golden duck and there was a huge appeal for caught behind for the hat-trick ball, but it was turned down.

Toby Roland-Jones also has two wickets to his name and Glamorgan are in real trouble.

  18. Hants attack looking 'more potent'published at 11:54 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Kent 32-1 v Hampshire

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent

Last week at Surrey the Hampshire bowlers felt collectively they didn’t quite get it right.

Here, on what looks to be a good batting surface already in Canterbury, the seamers have pitched the ball up a little further and look more potent for it.

Zak Crawley edged behind from a fullish Mohammad Abbas delivery and Ben Compton survived a very close lbw shout off the same bowler.

But this does look to be a very good toss for Kent to have won.

  19. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:49 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Karunaratne c McManus b Berg 13 (Northants v Yorks 22-3)

A third wicket now for Gareth Berg.

Sri Lankan Dimuth Karunaratne was brought in earlier in the week but he starts with a failure as Berg gets him caught behind.

Pushing a little keenly at one sent across the left-hander.

for Ed Pollockpublished at 11:49 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Worcestershire 60-0 v Sussex

    Ed PollockImage source, Rex Features

Ed Pollock moved from Warwickshire to Worcestershire in search of a chance in red-ball cricket.

Doesn't look like he's changed his approach much, though, as he races to 50 off 47 balls with a six and nine fours.

Can he repeat his century against Leicestershire in the opening week?

Opening partner Jake Libby is on eight not out.
